Abstract

This collection contains documents including newsletters, annual reports, correspondence, and other foundational sources that document the Rotary Club of Salisbury’s activities from 1920 to 2020. The Rotary Club of Salisbury is a branch of Rotary International that also has other branches located in different areas around the world.

Administrative History

Although Rotary International, the parent organization, was founded in 1905, the Rotary Club of Salisbury, often called the Salisbury Rotary Club, began on January 14, 1920, and was founded by Marvin Evans, who applied for a charter from Rotary International in 1919. Evans received the charter on February 1, 1920. Within the organization, two additional organizations emerged within the Rotary Club: the Inner Wheel and the Rotaract Club. The Inner Wheel was an all-women’s club which focused on the same standards as the Rotary Club. The Rotary Club identified themselves as the first club for service on the Delmarva Peninsula. The Rotary Club collaborated and worked under the District Governors throughout the club’s existence. Led by a club president and various chairmen, members of the organization come from a wide range of careers to access different communities. Throughout the club’s existence, it pioneered acts of service such as giving out scholarships, hosting international students, delivering meals, sponsoring sports teams, and volunteering for different events or programs in the community. The Salisbury Rotary Club has worked with Salisbury University for different events and has hosted many conferences, including meetings with members of the International Rotary Club. They are still active today, along with Rotary International.

Scope and Content Note

This collection includes the organization’s newsletters, annual reports, attendance records, directories, event programs and schedules, and biographical information on some of the early members of the club.  It also consists of the club’s publications, photographs, and awards of recognition. Together, these documents describe the organization’s founding, the people involved, and the work that they did from the early 20th century to 2020. The Rotary Club is still in effect, but the contents of the collection end in 2020. The biggest portions of the collection are the newsletters, annual reports, and minutes. A majority of the documents range from the 1960s, but the earliest records are from 1920 such as attendance records and a few letters.

The collection contains newsletters of various types between the years 1950 and 2006. There are annual reports of two types, Annual District Governor Reports and general annual reports between the years of 1959 to 2017. Directories, Rosters, Attendance, and Membership Lists includes all artifacts that lists the members of the Rotary Club between the years of 1920 to 2007. The collection also includes all documents involving the Inner Wheel, a smaller organization within the Rotary Club. There is a grouping that includes all of the organization’s correspondence from 1928 to 2004. The correspondence varied from letters of the Rotary Club to other people and vice versa, as well as post cards. The club's board minutes range from 1948 to 1996. Biographical Information is an accumulation of sources for some of the early members of the Rotary Club. The biographical information consists of print outs from a book, photographs, and career information for each of the club members. The collection contains photographs, many of which were not dated. There are also awards and certificates that were given to the Rotary Club by the House of Delegates, the Senate, and the governor of Maryland. Documents describe the organization history, such as a collection of pamphlets and books that the Rotary Club made that demonstrate their deeds from 1920 to 2020. The collection broadcasts the pamphlets and booklets that the club prepared for committees or songs. There are plans, schedules, and events that demonstrate the development of different events such as a golf competition and trips. Land records are included that show a deed to a plot of land and an urban design book of Salisbury, Maryland. Media such as CDs and VHS tapes of PowerPoint presentations and videos about the Rotary Club are also found within the collection. Lastly, the collection presents financial records that hold documents for the club such as the cumulation of fees and prices.

Arrangement Statement

This collection is primarily organized in chronological order. Some of the contents such as scrapbooks and biographical information were kept in the original order that it was received in. A majority of the other contents in the collection were already organized in chronological order upon arrival. The collection is organized into the following series:
