The A. Nayland Page papers document Dr. Page's time as the Academic Dean for Salisbury State College. While the documents range from 1965 to 1979, Dr. Page was only Academic Dean from 1976 to 1979. Materials include academic council and committee meeting notes, budget information, material on the College Level Entrance Program, commencement information, correspondence, and Deans meeting notes. As the Academic Dean, Dr. Page corresponded with many students about the transference of college credits, excusing course requirements, and handling credit deficiencies.

A.K. Talbot papers

Dr. Alfred K. Talbot was born in New York City on September 1, 1916. He attended the Hampton Institute and later the college of William and Mary. Prior to his tenure at Salisbury University, Talbot taught as a teacher, was named Principal of Carver Elementary School, and became the Assistant Principal of Burton Heights School. From 1962 to 1964 he served as the President of the Virginia Federation of Parents and Teachers and the Virginia Teachers Association. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Virginia Teachers Association and in 1968 became Supervisor of Elementary Schools of Williamsburg Public Schools. In 1970, he joined the Education and Sociology departments at Salisbury University and was the University's first full time African American professor. Talbot died on July 20, 2004 after 30 years of service to the university. Throughout his life, Talbot was involved with the Civil Rights Movement, the NAACP, and the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Talbot's collection include correspondence, reports, and other printed material from his tenure at Salisbury University, his involvement with the Civil Rights Movement, and his activities within Virginia's education system.

Alumni collection

The Salisbury University Alumni Association was founded to “develop and foster an abiding loyalty to Salisbury University; promote a professional and ethical spirit; encourage active participation in all activities that pertain to the betterment and growth of the University; unite graduates and undergraduates in Salisbury University; and take such other actions as may be deemed appropriate to promote the interests and welfare of Salisbury University.” (From the Salisbury University Alumni Association website.) The association achieves their mission by hosting events throughout the country to unite alumni, hosting reunions, and distributing newsletters. The association encourages its members to send notices of nuptials, births, and other lifetime achievements for publishing in the association’s newsletter. The Alumni Collection contains proposed constitutions, Alumni Association history, membership and reunion directories, invitations to reunions and other alumni events, wedding and birth announcements, postcards, ephemera, newspaper clippings, newsletters from 1950 to 2005, and a medal commemorating the completion of the Alumni House in 1996. Documents surrounding the Alumni Association’s induction ceremonies from 1931 to 1951 are present.

Benn Maggs Photographs

Benn Maggs was an instructor and sports coach at Salisbury University from 1933 to 1976. He was an amateur photographer who captured many different campus scenes from 1959 and 1983, most of which were athletics. The Maggs Physical Activity Center was named in his honor and he was elected to the Athletics Hall of Fame in 1985.

Circle K Club Scrapbook

The Circle K Club at Salisbury State College (now Salisbury University) was chartered in 1961 and was sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club. The service organization hosted events on campus and offered leadership opportunities for students. This three-ring, leather covered scrapbook contains photographs, newspaper clippings, and other ephemera related to the on-campus programs and after-school activities of the Circle K Club from 1979 to 1981. The documents demonstrate the different events that members of the Circle K Club participated in, including fall festivals, dances, camps, and volunteering. Pages for the 1980-1981 school year were intentionally burnt on its edges by the creators.

College Financial Records

This collection contains the financial records of Salisbury University during its first several decades of existence as the Maryland State Normal School and State Teachers College. The documents consist of ledger books with finance information dating from the mid-1920s to the late 1970s, with loose memorandums and calculations inside some of the books. The earlier items in the collection contain handwritten correspondence from William J. Holloway, the first principal of the school. Records include student payments to the school, disbursements from the school various Salisbury and national businesses, student refunds, cash payments, receipts, financial aid payments, payroll records, itemized supply and book purchases, and receipts. Records from the tenure of William J. Holloway contain reference to audits of the school by the state, and some refunds not received by students in correspondence and memorandums left inside the ledgers.

Dr. Francis Kane Papers

The Dr. Francis Kane Papers document Dr. Kane's work as a Philosophy professor at Salisbury State College, now Salisbury University, from 1981 to 2003. There are also materials related to events hosted by the Philosophy Department and the Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE), the 2003 Spring Philosophy Symposium, educational programs he was involved with, the Institute for Ethical Concern, Salisbury Foundation, and the Global Seminar program. Document types include correspondence, newspaper clippings and articles, proposals, press releases, thank you letters, and event programs. In addition, there are audio recordings of various philosophy symposiums from 1977 to 1991; however, many are undated.

James Thrash papers

James R. Thrash (b. 1932) was Salisbury University’s library director from 1969 to 1999. He obtained a B.A. from Ohio State University and a MSLA from Western Reserve University. The records consist of the personal and administrative papers of James R. Thrash. Most of the material relates to higher functions in academia such as annual reviews, reports, minutes, policy and procedure manuals. Several folders focus on the expansion of Blackwell Library in the 1970s and some contain research papers written by Thrash while taking English courses at Salisbury State College from 1978 to 1980.

James Welsh collection

Dr. James M. Welsh joined the English faculty at Salisbury State College (now Salisbury University) in 1971 and co-founded Literature/Film Quarterly in 1973 with Tom Erskine. For many years, he reviewed films in local newspapers and television. The James Welsh Collection includes Welsh's film reviews from the 1970s to 2013, as well as approximately 2600 film press kits, lobby cards, and press books that were used to write the reviews and 600 u-matic videotape audiovisual press kits used for television. Also included are many film studies journals that date from the 1940s to 2009, an almost complete run of the Literature/Film Quarterly from 1973 to 2009, and teaching materials used in film studies classes. Film titles are included in the inventory.

Leland Starnes papers

Leland Starnes was born in Sandersville, Georgia on February 5, 1923. He served in World War II and attended both Harvard and Yale. Throughout his life, Starnes taught at the Graham Eckes School, the Women's College of the University of North Carolina, the University of Pittsburgh, and Salisbury State College. He worked at Salisbury State College from 1972 until his death on May 14, 1980. The Leland Starnes Papers include production files from Starnes' tenure at Salisbury State along with personal items and some correspondence. Some files in the collection were created by Robert Cloyd. Playbills from unaffiliated theatres (inventory attached) are also included and range from 1921 to 2010. There is also a video created by Starnes' son, Tim, and Gary Weber in 1989 entitled "SSC Theatre: The Starnes Years, 1972-1980."

Manokin Hall Scrapbook

Manokin Hall was built in 1964 and renovated in 2010. It was the first dormitory building constructed after the Men’s Dormitory (now Wicomico Hall). This scrapbook contains photographs of women residents and resident advisors who lived in Manokin Hall from 1966 to 1973. While some photographs document school-sponsored events like homecoming, many depict parties, after-school activities, and other daily happenings.

Masters Theses, Doctor of Nursing Projects, and Ed.D Dissertation Projects

Since 1967, Salisbury University students who completed theses for their master’s degrees have deposited a copy in the University Archives. With the addition of Nursing and Education Doctoral Programs in 2015 and 2018 respectively , students also deposited their Doctoral in Nursing Projects (DNPs) and Ed.D Dissertation Projects. Until 2023, original copies were bound and cataloged and are available in our stacks. Additionally, many unbound duplicates of masters theses were placed in this collection. Beginning in 2023, unbound, but cataloged, copies of Theses, DNPs, and Ed.D dissertations were deposited into the University Archives. This collection also holds some administrative files relating to the binding, copyright, and digitization of the Master Theses from 2009-2010.

This collection documents the first black fraternity at Salisbury University, Omega Psi Phi (Gamma Kappa Chapter), which was founded by Jerry West in 1976. Included are photographs from the 2010s, a 40th anniversary program, two posters for parties, a digital copy of a photograph scrapbook from Charles Elliott (member of first line), and artifacts including a t-shirt, ceramic letters, ceremonial bricks, and a large wooden sword.

Preadolescent Children Case Studies

These case studies were written by Salisbury State College students for Dr. John May’s Education 300 course between 1968 and 1973. These particular case studies, which range from ages five to sixteen, were kept on reserve in the library as model examples for later students. The case studies each examine one local preadolescent child in depth, including behavioral analyses, descriptions of home life, and other mental and emotional assessments. The names of the case study subjects have been redacted and are referred to only by the first letter of the first name.

The Records of the German Club and German Study Abroad Programs collection documents the history of the German Club at Salisbury University and two study abroad programs offered by the Modern Languages Department between 1980 and 2015. Included in the collection are flyers, photographs, scrapbooks, video recordings, press releases, administrative forms, notes and correspondence among other materials created by Salisbury University (previously Salisbury State College and Salisbury State University) students and the advisor of German Club, Klaudia Thompson. Two events, Oktoberfest and Immersion Weekend, are the main focus of the German Club records. The University Libraries began as the College Library and was housed in Holloway Hall. In 1957, a building known as the College Library was built. The building was dedicated as Blackwell Library in 1966. In 2016, the library moved from Blackwell to the newly constructed Guerrieri Academic Commons. The records include information on the administration, employees, and changes of the Library. Changes mentioned include the building and dedication of Blackwell as well as the Guerrieri Academic Commons. Ledgers and journals in the collection detail incoming books, fines, and lost books. The collection also includes scrapbooks, photographs, and other ephemera relating to the library. Library publications and material relating to events hosted by the library are present in the collection.

Salisbury State College Rowing Club Scrapbook

The Salisbury State College Rowing Club was not an official sport within the school’s athletic association and was instead founded as a club in 1968. Practices and home competitions were held in the Wicomico River. The club was supervised by assistant dean of students, George P. Volenik. This scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, photographs, and records related to the Salisbury State College Rowing Club from 1968 to 1969. While the items were pasted within the scrapbook, many of them have become loose and are now located in a separate folder. There are also some drawings and lettering of the club’s title within the pages. The scrapbook was originally kept by the club’s faculty supervisor, George P. Volenik.

Sea Gull Century collection

The Sea Gull Century began in 1989 with less than 100 riders. It was originally hoted by the Salisbury State Cycling Club. The Century now accommodates roughly 7000 riders and has been nationally ranked. Proceeds from the Century are donated to various local organizations. Both 63-mile and 100-mile races have been offered in the past, along with minor races on the Friday afternoon before and the Sunday morning after the major race. The majority of the Sea Gull Century collection consists of publicity documents, including press releases and newspaper clippings. The collection also includes other documents including brochures, maps, patches, and photographs. Documents from other bike rallies hosted by Salisbury University, though not affiliated with the Sea Gull Century, are present in the collection. Such rallies include the 1988 GEAR UP Bike Convention and the 1989, 1992, 1993, and 1994 Bike Rallies hosted by Salisbury University. Press releases in many of the series were paired with their corresponding newspaper articles.

Willard L. Stevens papers

The Willard Stevens papers are a series of scrapbooks documenting his life’s journey called “Walking Short”. He documents his childhood on the farm in Snow Hill, Maryland, his military stationing in the United States Army Air Corps in Florida, and his ministry years as a Methodist pastor. Stevens also notes national events including racial tensions of the Civil Rights movement, the deaths of Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. and President John F. Kennedy, as well as the various wars of his lifetime. His papers also document the adoption and citizenship process, he and his wife took to adopt a Korean girl, Robin. Winifred Helmes Papers

The Winifred Helmes Papers document the professional activities of Dr. Winifred G. Helmes from 1931 to 2005 with the bulk of the materials dating between 1954 and 1981. The collection consists primarily of correspondence and documents from her prolific career. From 1951 to 1954, Helmes was part of the executive staff for the American Association of University Women. In 1954, she became Assistant Director of the U.S. Department of Labor's Women's Bureau. She was appointed Special Assistant to the Under Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare in 1959. From 1961 to 1967, Helmes served as Academic Dean at the Foxcroft School and at the Samuel Ready School from 1967 to 1968. In 1968, Helmes joined the faculty at Salisbury State College and taught until her retirement in 1981.

Such events included sports games, yearly banquets, and conferences not held in Salisbury.
