Albert Laws papers

Abstract: The Albert Laws papers consist of the official and personal records of Albert Laws, and the family records of Margaret Laws Engle, Victor Laws Jr., and Maude Perdue Laws Truitt. The collection documents Albert Laws’ career as an officer in the United States Army, including his service in the Spanish American War and in the Philippine-American War from 1889-1908. The papers include a photograph album and ephemera from the West Point Class of 1893; correspondence, documents and photographs of the 24th US Infantry and 35th Infantry, USV; an eyewitness account of the Battle of San Juan Hill; and a proclamation signed by Emilio Aguinaldo, the first President of the Philippines. The papers also include Albert Laws’ personal correspondence from 1889-1908, with notes by his niece, Margaret Laws Engle. The collection also documents the family genealogy of the Bacon, Laws and Truitt families of Sussex County, Delaware and Wicomico and Worcester Counties, Maryland from 1795-1997. The papers include the personal correspondence and financial records of William L. Laws from 1853-1924 and genealogical notes from Margaret Laws Engle, Victor Laws Jr and Maude Perdue Laws Truitt. The papers also include a survey from 1795, records of the 30th Virginia Infantry Regiment, CSA from 1862 and a business ledger from 1864-1896.

Captain William Edward Wheatley papers

The Captain William Edward Wheatley papers document the commercial activities of the Sussex County, Delaware merchant. Wheatley bought, sold, traded, and shipped quantities of wood (including planks and shingles), ashes, agricultural produce, and more to markets mostly in Baltimore and Philadelphia. Included are his correspondence from 1843 to 1873, mostly from merchants including his son William in Philadelphia; Laurel and Broad Creek, Delaware real estate indentures, deeds, and legal agreements that date between 1786 and 1884; twelve notebooks and ledgers documenting the repair of scows and Wheatley's trade between 1822 and 1862; business receipts dating between 1814 and1873; and printed ephemera and loose papers dating between 1854 and 1921. Three indentures relate to an 1862-1863 real estate transaction between Wheatley and an African American, Isaac Morris.

Delmarva Folklife Project collection

This collection contains the administrative files, fieldwork recordings, and photographs collected by the Delmarva Folklife Project between 1997 and 2003. The project documented Delmarva folk arts and cultural traditions through oral history interviews, photographs, video recordings, and collected materials used for research. Additionally, it promoted regional folk arts through mentoring programs, collection distribution to cultural institutions, and two 2004 publications: From Bridge to Boardwalk: An Audio Journey Across Maryland's Eastern Shore and Folk Arts and Cultural Traditions of the Delmarva Peninsula: An Interpretive Resource Guide. Also included are four boxes containing the reproduced slides and tapes that were distributed to various cultural institutions in the region.

Ethel Fisher Hedlicka Papers

This collection includes Ethel’s Home Economics class book from 1916, two of Ethel’s children’s books from 1908 and 1909, early baby nursing bottle, letters to Joseph and Ethel, report cards of both Ethel and her daughter, Charlotte, and Ethel’s high school yearbook from 1916 filled with pictures of friends, dance cards, and other sorts of memorabilia. Also in this collection are Children’s needlework made by Ethel’s daughter, Joseph’s Hedlicka’s wedding pants from 1923, a clown suit made by Ethel in 1920, and a World War I sailor shirt worn by George Thallman in 1917. Lastly in this collection is an assortment of World War I souvenirs sent from France to Ethel by Joseph in 1917 such as beautifully embroidered handkerchiefs, an apron, a postcard, and a scarf as well as a fan.

Farmers Bank of New Castle, Delaware Ledger

This ledger, which includes a separate leather ledger glossary for names, documents the accounts held by and activities of the New Castle branch of the Farmers Bank of Delaware from 1834 to 1838. The bank was the second incorporated in the state of Delaware and served many of the companies in the area at that time. The New Castle branch, in particular, sought to fund the farms of Kent and Sussex Counties.

The John Jacob Collection consists of two parts that document the life and career of attorney and historian, John E. Jacob, Jr.: collected material and personal research. Jacob also kept detailed handwritten notes and indices when researching various topics related to the history of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, as well as his handwritten drafts for books and lectures, which comprise series two of the collection. Kent Griffith Collection

The Kent Griffith Collection consists of extensive documentation of railways on and near Delmarva, including (but not limited to) the Eastern Shore Railroad, Pennsylvania Railroad, and New York, Pennsylvania, and Norfolk Railroad from the 1800s to the 1990s. While the collection includes Griffith's research notes and correspondence, as well as photographs he took and collected, the railroad memorabilia that Griffith collected was thorough and diverse. These documents include pass cards, time tables, employee timebooks, papers from a railroad employee TC Hurst, a scrapbook with hundreds of early 20th century Pennsylvania Railroad technical and safety memos, shipping and freight tags and receipts, detailed track charts and maps, and more.

Mendel L. Helig Collection

This small collection of papers is composed of duplicate material in the possession of Mendel Heilig. Primary interest is a scanned and printed photograph of a family gathering that occurred around 1911. Heilig's grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins are each identified. In addition, his papers include two newspaper articles - one from the Baltimore Sun (Sunday, May 10, 1998, Perspectives section) and the other from The Daily Times (Saturday, April 13, 1996, Religion section) which discuss Jewish life on the Delmarva Peninsula. Correspondence written by Mendel Heilig in response to the Daily Times article and two maps indicating where the Heilig family immigrated from (Shavil and Urvalis, Lithuania) are also included.

Ron Wilson Papers

Messick Professor Emeritus of the University of Delaware entitled: Governing Delaware: Policy Problems in the First State. The manuscript, which was published in 2000 by the University of Delaware Press, is an in-depth analysis of the political culture, governance, and major public policy issues of Delaware in the 1990s. Divided into three parts, it first discusses the state's economy, political parties and politics, and the governor as leader. The second part considers Delaware's governance comprising state and local government, and public administration and finance. The last part focuses on the quality-of-life policy problems of land-use planning, the environment, health, public education, welfare, and crime and justice.

Willis Tull papers

The Willis Tull papers include ephemera related to the Milbourne and Townsend familes of the Delmarva Peninsula. There is an excerpt from the 1931 text "Tidewater Maryland" which notes Ralph Milbourne, as well as scans of documents related to genealogical work done on the Milbourne and Townsend familes. There is an insert article from a magazine on George A. Townsend. Correspondence on "Crisfield, Maryland" letterhead addressed to "Myrtle" from an unknown writer is also included. There is the 1957 commencement and baccalaureate program from the State Teachers College, Towson, Maryland. Albert Richard Tull is mentioned in "Thatcham-Then and Now", 1983. Included is program from Maryland's Four Hundred Monument Rededication and Colonial Ancestors Roster, both from 1992. Finally, there is a copy of a colonial pamphlet from 1659, reprinted in 2002.
