Cloth sanitary napkin, c. 1940s.

Today, sanitary napkins come with a slight adhesive and are easy to use and change. Before the introduction of these modern conveniences, women often made their own sanitary napkins and pinned them into place.

While imperfect, it was better than in years prior when women used folded rags that they washed and re-used repeatedly. Of course, discussing a woman’s menstrual cycle, while more common today, used to be the ultimate “unmentionable” topic.
