Farm Management, Sussex Co., Del., Ledgers

Two ledgers that document the care and management of animals as well as chicken egg distribution, 1881-1926; Seaford, Sussex County, Delaware. This coincides with notations from 1893 of men who wanted to purchase cows and hogs. The author of the ledgers also wrote recipes for hog food and how to rid cockroaches, in addition to other farm activities. Written later, 1881-1950, local deaths of friends, family members and acquaintances are also noted, this includes the history of the Gardner family.
Farm Picker Ticket collection

This collection contains approximately 435 farm picker tickets (or "checks") from farms in Maryland, primarily on the Eastern Shore. The cardboard tickets/checks were given to crop pickers to turn in for payment and feature the farm name and, occasionally, the location. While most of the tickets were for berry pickers and other agricultural crops, there is one for crabs. Also included are four canning labels for Jack's Tomatoes (Preston, Maryland), Friel's White Sweet Corn (Queenstown, Maryland), Old Wye tomato juice packed by Friel (Queenstown, Maryland), and Friel's Tomatoes (Queenstown, Maryland).

This collection contains the real estate and business records of Salisbury-area assessor Gerald B. Truitt from the 1960s to the 1980s. The collection consists of land and property emulations for residences and businesses in the Maryland and Delmarva area. It also contains publications and documents related to Maryland and Delaware counties and localities. The collection also contains some publications and news clippings about Ocean City, Maryland resort development in the 1970s and 1980s. Truitt also kept files related to Maryland agriculture from the 1960s to the late 1970s. The assessment files consist of notes, maps, photos, and property value estimates.

The records of John H. Dulany and Son Incorporated, (also known Dulany and Johnson and Dulany and Sons), documents the growth and management of John H. Dulany and Son Inc. which was located in Fruitland Maryland. The materials date from the company’s inception in 1899 through 1984 with the bulk of the material dating from 1944-1966. The materials include photographs, correspondence, biographies, and awards documents the growth of the Dulany plants as well as business and political interests of the company. Biographies and photographs of Dulany family members and histories of the company are also included.

Wye Mills Ledger, January-November 1853. The Wye Mills Ledger details the transactions of the grist mill with customers. The mill ran a general store as well as processed grains for sale. Also included in the ledger are agricultural articles, and a written list of English kings, ending with Queen Victoria I.

The Live Stock and Chickens scrapbook documents the poultry and cattle industry from 1899-1912 through a series of newspaper clippings from the American Agriculturalist, the Country Gentlemen, and the Practical Farmer as well as series of U.S. Department of Agriculture pamphlets on poultry management, ducks and geese, breeds of dairy cattle, and turkeys.

The audio-visual project materials produced by the Maryland State Department of Education document the life and customs of the peoples of Maryland including the agricultural landscape and oceanic industries as well as the historic landscape. Materials include a series of photographic slides, film strips, and the corresponding scripts to the classroom materials that date from 1950-1956 with the bulk of the material dating from 1955-1956.

The papers of Michael Lewis reflect research he and several students collected regarding Maryland environmental history after his arrival at Salisbury University in 2000. A significant portion of the papers pertain to the Delmarva Peninsula including the health of the Chesapeake Bay, Ocean City, and Maryland ecology. There is also research conducted on the transition of 20th century Delmarva agriculture and the poultry industry. The papers include several oral histories from Dr. Lewis’ colleagues, ornithologists from the Ward Museum, and Delmarva environmentalists. Many of the documents are facsimiles of their original whose origin dates from 1887-2009.

The Otis S. Twilley Collection documents the life and business of Otis Spooner Twilley, founder and long-time owner of the Otis S. Twilley Seed Company. Among the collection are his college yearbooks from the University of Maryland, newspapers containing articles written about his life and business, and seed catalogs from his company dating from 1924 to 1988. There are dozens of pictures of Twilley and his farms, as well as correspondence between him and Arthur C. Abbott of Abbott and Cobb, Inc., the United States Department of Agriculture, and the Wicomico County School District.
