The Papers of J. Millard Tawes consist of the political and personal papers of J. Millard Tawes and of historic Maryland records. The collection documents Tawes’ career as a politician from 1930-1979, including his service as the 54th Governor of Maryland from 1959-1967. It contains speeches, correspondence, photographs, publications and ephemera offering insight into fifty years of state and national politics. The collection includes Tawes’ speeches on the Freedom Riders and on the Cambridge Riots of 1963. It also includes correspondence between Tawes and Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson.

Ron Wilson Papers

The collection contains plants, survey data, samples, reports, and correspondence regarding Ron Wilson and Frank Hirst, two self-taught botanists, and their work for The Nature Conservancy, a national preservationist organization, from 1978 to 2021. Also included is an extensive herbarium of native Delmarva plant species compiled by both Wilson and Hirst. The work in the collection covers botanizing throughout New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland's Eastern Shore.

The Wayne Gilchrest papers document the political career of Congressman Wayne Gilchrest who represented Maryland’s 1st Congressional District, which includes Maryland’s Eastern Shore counties in addition to portions of Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties. The Wayne Gilchrest papers span his political career from 1989-2008, with the majority of the material dating from 1996-2008. The records encompass his extensive political career and are documented through volumes of correspondence and his congressional voting record including his environmental work and activism; as well as his opposition to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Also of note are his trips as a member of the Congressional Delegation throughout the United States and the world.

Worcester County Soil Conservation Services Collection

The Worcester County Soil Conservation Services Collection primarily contains photographs, slides, and negatives depicting conservation activities in Worcester County, Maryland (as well as Somerset and Wicomico Counties) between the 1940s and 1990s. These photographs were taken by both the United States Department of Agriculture and the Maryland Department of Agriculture and nearly every image contains detailed descriptive information. Also included are tax ditch plans and specifications that date between 1934 and 1990 and educational resources (such as slide series and VHS tapes) that date between the 1980s and 1990s.

Worcester Environmental Trust records

The Worcester Environmental Trust (WET) records reflect a movement to preserve the ecology of the Delmarva Peninsula. Joseph and Ilia Fehrer spearheaded activism in Worcester County, Md. from 1972 until 2002, but were also instrumental in petitioning and lobbying for numerous environmental causes along the Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay. The Worcester Environmental Trust records range from 1959 to 2004, and contain executive, financial, and legal records that demonstrate this once effective environmental non-profit organization.
