The Captain William Edward Wheatley papers document the commercial activities of the Sussex County, Delaware merchant. Wheatley bought, sold, traded, and shipped quantities of wood (including planks and shingles), ashes, agricultural produce, and more to markets mostly in Baltimore and Philadelphia. Included are his correspondence from 1843 to 1873, mostly from merchants including his son William in Philadelphia; Laurel and Broad Creek, Delaware real estate indentures, deeds, and legal agreements that date between 1786 and 1884; twelve notebooks and ledgers documenting the repair of scows and Wheatley's trade between 1822 and 1862; business receipts dating between 1814 and1873; and printed ephemera and loose papers dating between 1854 and 1921. Three indentures relate to an 1862-1863 real estate transaction between Wheatley and an African American, Isaac Morris.

The collection includes advertising and trade publications related to menswear, as well as store administrative records. The store advertised their "Name Brand" products heavily, and the materials include examples of print ads from brands such as Botany 500 suits, Stetson hats, and Haggar clothing.

The Danny Brown collection consists of ephemera and documents related to the history of Salisbury, Maryland and the Delmarva Peninsula with items dating from 1896 to 2007 (the bulk of the materials range from 1908 to 1996). Included in the collection are two general or hardware store ledgers dating from 1908 to 1920, business and political advertisements, event programs, postcards, photo reproductions, newspaper clippings, and writings about Salisbury's history. Also included is a handwritten list of canneries along the Nanticoke River.

This collection contains photographs, newspaper articles, postcards, menus, a high school yearbook, high school diploma, family history information and a variety of local information. The photographs in the collection are from the early 1900s, and include houses as well as people. The newspaper articles date from 1948 to the 1970s and are about a variety of topics. The earliest article is a sale advertisement for a house in Salisbury, Maryland. Ocean City postcards from around the 1970s show hotels and aerial views of Ocean City. There are also menus and postcards from restaurants in Ocean City. The Wicomico High yearbook, from 1927, includes pictures of the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior class. Two high school diplomas from Wicomico County from 1920 and 1926. Farm records, shareholding records and family books give insight to the life of a family living around the Lower Eastern Shore. Finally this collection includes a number of pens and pencils listing the names and addresses of local businesses. As well as information on the local Salisbury baseball team in 1948, local campaign items and cards from local attractions.

However, the entries focus primarily on major life events such as a local student who was expelled for stealing from his store, the births and deaths in his family and community, and the death of a family of acquaintances in an 1876 railroad accident. Also included in the journal is a genealogical account of the Mathews family.
Diary of George Newell

This diary was written in 1866 by George Newell, who owned a dry goods store on Hanover Street in Boston, Massachusetts. George and his wife, Hannah, had a child on July 15 and also had four other children. He wrote of thefts, his brother's return from war, attending socials, home repairs, business dealings, visits from relatives and friends, and weather that included a tornado. He went on several trips during the year, including a fishing trip to Portland, Maine and a visit to New York City where he toured Central Park, attended an auction, and went to Brooklyn.
