Cory Family Letters

These letters were written from Abby, John, and Isaac Cory between 1852 and 1859, though primarily in 1852 and 1853. The Corys wrote letters from Stockton, California to their family in Tiverton, Rhode Island explaining to them their life events during the gold rush. The Corys left from New Bedford, Massachusetts and discussed their journey on the sea, across the isthmus on mule with natives, their arrival in San Francisco, and the muddiness of Stockton.
Culver Family papers

Transcription of the World War I diary of Corporal Merrill Gordy Culver who documented his experience from registration at the Atkinson Voting House in Worcester County, Maryland to his transport aboard the SS MESABA and his service as a gunner who served in various locales throughout France. Also included in the transcription are copies of the letters and cards Corp. Culver sent home to his wife, Lillian, 1917-1919. Culver's wife, Lillian documented her life in an oral history from her birth in 1898 in Philadelphia to the family's move to Salisbury in 1904 and her continuing life and education. The oral history was given to their son, Merrill Gordy Culver III., in 1992. Digital photographs and digital transcriptions of Mrs. Culver's diaries from family vacations are also included.

Ed Harris Letters

The Ed Harris Letters were written between 1944 and 1946 by Ed Harris's wife, Sophia, to her husband who was an African American soldier fighting in World War II. The Harris' lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In her letters, Sophia wrote about her daily activities and how she would wait for Ed's letters. She wrote about them trying to buy a house, starting a life together once Ed returned from the war, and updates on the Harris family. She also mentioned that she had a job. Ed was stationed in France, then transferred to Germany where he visited Hitler's Eagle's Nest. Harris mentioned that Ed wrote about American soldiers living overseas with their families and questioned Ed if she could join him overseas. Included in the collection are photographs of Ed Harris, three small V-mail cards, and Ed's discharge papers.

English and American Photographers' Correspondence

This collection contains the correspondence of two photographers-- an Englishman and an American--between 1939 and 1940. Also included are several photographs and negatives of England and Germany, one of which features Nazi flags behind a statue of King Wilhelm. The photographers wrote letters to and from about their love of photography, but also commented on the escalation of the Second World War. The men, who were both 27 years old, were William Rosenblohm of Mt. View, New Jersey and George Church of Barking, Essex.
Ethel Fisher Hedlicka Papers

This collection includes Ethel’s Home Economics class book from 1916, two of Ethel’s children’s books from 1908 and 1909, early baby nursing bottle, letters to Joseph and Ethel, report cards of both Ethel and her daughter, Charlotte, and Ethel’s high school yearbook from 1916 filled with pictures of friends, dance cards, and other sorts of memorabilia. Also in this collection are Children’s needlework made by Ethel’s daughter, Joseph’s Hedlicka’s wedding pants from 1923, a clown suit made by Ethel in 1920, and a World War I sailor shirt worn by George Thallman in 1917. Lastly in this collection is an assortment of World War I souvenirs sent from France to Ethel by Joseph in 1917 such as beautifully embroidered handkerchiefs, an apron, a postcard, and a scarf as well as a fan.

The Frank Dunbaugh Papers document the activity of a Major in the United States Army immediately following the Second World War. Dunbaugh commanded the Allied Military Government (AMG) in the Hersbruck district of post-war Germany. He discussed how his unit identified former Nazi party members, the interrogation of S.S. officers at a castle, a riot in a Polish refugee camp, the mistreatment of civilians and rape of women, American soldiers being ambushed, American G.I.'s mistreating local civilians and German police, encounters with Russian officers, and meeting concentration and labor camp survivors.
