The Hodgman Family Journals document the lives of Hellena (Hellen) Hauserman and Kendrick Hodgman from 1875 to 1932 in sixteen journals. Two of the journals are written by Hellen in 1875 and 1876 prior to her marriage to Kendrick and describe her daily activities on her family's farm in Parma, Ohio. Thirteen of the journals are written by Kendrick, from 1891 and 1919-1932, about his daily activities in Ohio. The last journal's author is unknown but chronicles the Hodgman family's history from 1875 to 1932.
Home Remedies and Recipes Journal

This journal primarily contains circa 1840s home remedies for afflictions and recipes for common household items such as cologne, ice cream, hair oil, shaving cream, soap, ink, ointment, bitters, and tooth paste. Several entries concern the health of horses. The journal also includes geometry notes, ephemera from 1878, and farming notes and publication cuttings from the 1850s.
James Grossman Letters

The James Grossman Letters consist of correspondence between the Navy sailor James Grossman and his parents, Ray and Myrtle, who lived in Alliance, Ohio. While most of the approximately 500 letters are dated between 1956 and 1957 when Grossman was aboard the USS Samuel B. Roberts (DD-823), there are letters written by Ray and Myrtle that date as early as 1910 and as late as 1970. Grossman wrote extensively about his service aboard the destroyer as it went to South America, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East via the Suez Canal (it was the last warship to pass through the canal before the Suez Crisis in 1956.) Additionally, Grossman and his parents wrote frequently about the farm back in Ohio and sent hometown newspapers. Also included are two photos of Grossman (December 1956 and March 1957), military ephemera, and handwritten notes about the family's history and miscellaneous drawings.

Project records of the Joseph Benjamin Hudson film document the life of one of the most well-known and longest living Delawareans, Joseph Benjamin Hudson (1874-1982) from Mission, Sussex County. Donald Ward produced the project from 1980-1981 and conducted the interview with Mr. Hudson recording how life had changed over the last 100 years. Commentary from Mr. Hudson includes early life in post-Civil War Delaware, farming and Carey’s United Methodist Camp. The interview is documented on five types of audio-visual formats as well as through a script and transcripts.

The Lankford Family Papers document the Somerset County, Maryland family's activities through extensive correspondence, land records, photographs, newspaper clippings, genealogical notes, and other materials. While the collection dates between 1683 and 1975, the majority dates between 1812 and 1897. Much of the correspondence revolves around Benjamin Lankford (1798-1886), who served in the Maryland General Assembly between the 1840s and 1870s, as well as his wife, Susan, and her sister Mary Jane Guillet. The correspondence in the collection is described at the item level.

Memoir of William Vaux

The Memoir of William Vaux was written in 1894 and recounts the life of the Doylestown, Pennsylvania man who was born in Philadelphia to British immigrants in 1825. The memoir covers his early family life, being sent out to work for Quaker farmers in the country at age seven, his teenage years working for farmers and learning the shoe making trade. He was an entrepreneur and described his businesses, houses and other buildings he bought and sold, his financial hardship in the 1870s. He also joined the home guard to during Robert E. Lee's invasion at Gettysburg in 1863, though he did not see combat.

Millwood Plantation Journal (Old Long Field, Maryland)

This journal was used both as a diary and as a business ledger for a plantation known as Millwood, located in Old Long Field, Prince George's County, Maryland (present day Forestville), between 1863 and 1865. The journal was printed by J.W. Randolph in Richmond, Virginia and was intended as to be a "Plantation and Farm Instruction, Regulation, Record, Inventory, and Account Book For the Use of the Manager on the Estate." The journal begins with 20 pages of printed text that describes how to run a successful plantation including tables, data, and diagrams, as well as a section on the "Treatment of Negroes." Following the printed section are sporadic daily entries written by two different authors, likely from the Barrett family, who recorded the operations of the plantation, family events, and brief comments on the American Civil War between 1863 and 1864. There is also one page that lists six slaves in the inventory: Tom, Jim, John, Gill, Sarah, and Phebe. The transcribed journal is attached.
