Diary of Mister Lovering

This diary was written sporadically between 1868 and 1876 by Mister Lovering, a farmer and preacher who lived in various places throughout eastern Pennsylvania including Luzerne County, Berks County, and Franklin County. Lovering initially used the diary to record paint recipes, but then used the rest of the pages to write personal and private entries. His wife accused him of being an adulterer with the family servant, Emma Reefs, as well as other "harlots" in town, which affected Lovering for a lengthy period of time. Also included with the diary is a deed for a cemetery plot in Aulenback Cemetery for his wife's family, the Printzs of Reading, Pennsylvania.

The Diary of Nellie Lindsley was recorded by a farmer's wife in Tuscarora, New York throughout 1938. Nellie lived with her husband, Budd, and son, Earl. Each day she wrote how many eggs she collected in the morning, as well as her other activities on the farm, which included working with ducks and chickens, baking, cooking, canning, and working in the garden. Lindsley also inserted several newspaper clippings into the diary.

This diary was recorded in 1867 by an unnamed man in Ohio. The author, who was 18 years old, attended school and worked on a farm. His daily activities included hunting and fishing, as well as playing the fiddle. On April 1, the author recorded his thoughts after voting for the first time. Entries are sporadic and begin on February 1.

The Duvall and Williams families were community-oriented people who served as farmers, doctors, and attorneys from Kennedyville, Kent County, Maryland, and Salisbury, Wicomico County, Maryland as well as northern Delaware. Within the Duvall and Williams Families collection are family photograph albums, ledgers, a scrapbook, and ephemera. The photograph albums dating to the 1880s to 1950s offer a glimpse into the lives of the families. The primary focus of the collection is the series of photographs that depict farm life, a Methodist Church Camp Meeting one of the families attended, family vacations, their pets, and farm animals. The ledgers date from the 1850s to the 1890s and pertain to farming on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and Delaware’s New Castle County. The scrapbook dates from the early 1800s to 1900 and contains newspaper clippings from the Mid-Atlantic region.
Farm Management, Sussex Co., Del., Ledgers

Two ledgers that document the care and management of animals as well as chicken egg distribution, 1881-1926; Seaford, Sussex County, Delaware. This coincides with notations from 1893 of men who wanted to purchase cows and hogs. The author of the ledgers also wrote recipes for hog food and how to rid cockroaches, in addition to other farm activities. Written later, 1881-1950, local deaths of friends, family members and acquaintances are also noted, this includes the history of the Gardner family.
Farm Picker Ticket collection

This collection contains approximately 435 farm picker tickets (or "checks") from farms in Maryland, primarily on the Eastern Shore. The cardboard tickets/checks were given to crop pickers to turn in for payment and feature the farm name and, occasionally, the location. While most of the tickets were for berry pickers and other agricultural crops, there is one for crabs. Also included are four canning labels for Jack's Tomatoes (Preston, Maryland), Friel's White Sweet Corn (Queenstown, Maryland), Old Wye tomato juice packed by Friel (Queenstown, Maryland), and Friel's Tomatoes (Queenstown, Maryland).

Farmers Bank of New Castle, Delaware Ledger

This ledger, which includes a separate leather ledger glossary for names, documents the accounts held by and activities of the New Castle branch of the Farmers Bank of Delaware from 1834 to 1838. The bank was the second incorporated in the state of Delaware and served many of the companies in the area at that time. The New Castle branch, in particular, sought to fund the farms of Kent and Sussex Counties.
