The Papers of J. Millard Tawes consist of the political and personal papers of J. Millard Tawes and of historic Maryland records. The collection documents Tawes’ career as a politician from 1930-1979, including his service as the 54th Governor of Maryland from 1959-1967. It contains speeches, correspondence, photographs, publications and ephemera offering insight into fifty years of state and national politics. The collection includes Tawes’ speeches on the Freedom Riders and on the Cambridge Riots of 1963. It also includes correspondence between Tawes and Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson.

Papers of the House of Corrections of the City of Chicago document the lives and thoughts of inmates at the Chicago/Cook County, Illinois House of Corrections in 1923. These 17 to 21 year old boys wrote confessions, letters about their daily life, memories of their home lives, and completed various assignments that their teacher, Mrs. Hoerr, tasked to them. Many of the assignments, letters, and other writings are revealing of the daily thoughts and activities of the incarcerated peoples, as well as their jobs or lives prior to the House of Corrections as "hobos," "tramps," or "bums."

The records date from George Whitehead’s involvement with the PTA from 1985-1999 with the bulk of the material dating from 1985-1994. Participation of the Wicomico County Council PTA in the educational system and in the local community are documented via meeting agendas, correspondence, reports, newsletters, newspaper clippings, photographs, and convention packets.

The second series contains records from the State Teachers College. The third series includes building surveys completed in preparation for an exhibit.

The Piney Point Community League was established in St. Mary's County, Maryland in 1918 for the "Benefit of Colored People." The League's work included the establishment of the benefit organization known as the "Good Hope Home League" in 1919, formation of an industrial school for African Americans, creation of structured home school programs, and disbursement of sick and death insurance benefits. This ledger documents the League's work through meeting minutes, member rolls (with officer names), accounts for charities and the industrial colored school, accounts of sick benefits and deaths, and League laws. Also included are loose notes regarding attendance and dues that were likely originally inside the ledger. The transcribed ledger is attached.
Preadolescent Children Case Studies

These case studies were written by Salisbury State College students for Dr. John May’s Education 300 course between 1968 and 1973. These particular case studies, which range from ages five to sixteen, were kept on reserve in the library as model examples for later students. The case studies each examine one local preadolescent child in depth, including behavioral analyses, descriptions of home life, and other mental and emotional assessments. The names of the case study subjects have been redacted and are referred to only by the first letter of the first name.

This collection documents the childhood of a Tyaskin, Maryland girl, Rebecca Lee Larmore (later Griffith), from 1930 to 1944. Included are Sharptown and Hebron Elementary and High School report cards from 1930 to 1940 (grade 2 through high school) and a ration book holder with an advertisement for Cook's Cab Service. The rations were issued to the Jones and Larmore family members who lived at the Turnstile Farm in Tyaskin near Coxs Corner in 1944: Irving C Jones, Martha Ellen Powell Jones, Ethel Jones Larmore, Lloyd Lennox Larmore, and Rebecca Lee Larmore. Included are notes from the donor (Rebecca Lee Larmore's daughter), Lee Ellen Griffith.

The Record Book for School District No. 12, Union Township, Fayette County, Ohio dates between 1850 and 1871. The minutes detail officer elections, the building of a school house (cost specified), erection of a plank fence around the schoolyard, the amount of taxes levied per tax-payer and voluntary subscriptions received "for school purposes." The record also specifies the number of scholars during each quarter (boys outnumbered girls 2:1), average daily attendance, teacher salaries, firewood purchases, diverse repairs to the building, and the acquisition of a pump.

Searight, who titled the class history "Historical Incidents connected with the Class of 763: The Sweets of Departed Hours," the journal includes a list of class members as of September 8, 1859, class events, Greek and literary society membership, scrapes with named faculty members and the college president, individuals' signing (or decisions not to sign) an important class pledge, and the growing effects of the Civil War. Overall, the record provides an illustration of life in Gambier, Ohio before the outbreak of the Civil War.
