Freedom Ainsworth papers

The Freedom Ainsworth papers document the restoration and preservation efforts of three of the Manokin Historic District’s oldest structures Beckford Manor, Almodington and More And Case It (also known as Holly Hurst), located in Princess Anne, Md. The materials date from 1766-1767, 1803-1999 with the bulk of the material dating from the purchase and restoration of the three structures, 1967-1994. Restoration activities, as well as property histories, are documented via correspondence, detailed measurements and notes, architectural drawings, and photographs. Also documented through a series of ledgers are the accounting transactions of Henry Smith Lankford and H. Fillmore Lankford as well as various merchants from Somerset Count including Teackle Dennis and Teackle.

Hickman and Townsend daybook documents the goods purchased by consumers; it is noted through the ledger when specific items were purchased or if non-descript items were purchased the term "goods" was used. The first and last name of the purchaser is noted as well as the status of their account.

This ledger was maintained by the Holladay family of Cleveland, Ohio from 1843 to 1850, beginning with Martha and later on S.W. While Martha kept records of individuals boarding and purchasing goods from 1843 to 1845, S.W. kept records of legal transactions from 1847 to 1850.

Howard and Marvin E. Cox Ledger and Journal

The Howard and Marvin E. Cox Ledger and Journal contains detailed handwritten vital information on individuals in Nanticoke and other Wicomico County communities, in addition to narratives recorded by Howard and Marvin Cox. Included are records listing marriages (1865-1979) and deaths (1838-1982) with a separate section for African American deaths (1898-1980). At the end of the ledger is a journal written by Marvin Cox from 1918 to 1964 describing the oyster and construction business in the community, including the meeting minutes of the Willing Workers of Nanticoke. The entire ledger is transcribed and attached to the finding aid.
James Baxter Chestertown Ledger and Ephemera Collection

This collection contains a ledger which had multiple receipts pinned in, as well as recorded receipt information written in the actual book. In addition to that, there were many loose receipts, that probably fell out of the ledger throughout time. Some of the receipts include checks to the Church Hill Bank of Maryland, the Chestertown Bank of Maryland, and the Queen Anne's National Bank of Centerville. In addition to those, there are receipts from auto garages, pharmacies, a dairy and poultry store, a lumber yard, a hardware store, a household cookware store, a subscription to Kent News, and a few letters from Downes Music House. All receipts date early 1920s. Included in this collection is a hand drawn advertisement and sign up list for a barbershop quartet competition.

The Jim Wootten railroad ephemera includes items related to railroads on the Delmarva peninsula. Included are a New York, Philadelphia, and Norfolk Rail Road Company baggage master's record that documents work in 1893 and 1900, three locomotive operating manuals from 1950 and 1953, and 18 passenger tickets for the Pennsylvania Railroad that date between 1924 and 1941.
John D. Williams papers

The John D. Williams papers contain the financial records of the Salisbury, Maryland resident and owner of L.E. WIlliams Company from 1867 to 1920. Included are two savings account booklets from the 1900s to 1920, financial notes and estate documents from the 1890s, a financial ledger also used for the minutes of the Salisbury Coronet Band from the 1870s, and two high school graduation speeches from 1899 and 1901.
John Hafford Ledgers

These ten ledgers were maintained by John F. Hafford of Washington, D.C. between 1923 and 1960. Hafford was a First World War veteran who worked as a clerk within the U.S. government, specifically the Department of Labor. Throughout the 1920s to 1950s, he bought, sold, and managed properties throughout the D.C. area and western shore of Maryland. His accounts were with various individuals and companies, many of which were indexed at the beginning of each ledger. Maryland properties were primarily located in Anne Arundel county, including Deale and Churchton. Also included are advertisements for his properties and two photographs, one likely of Hafford.
John Jacob Collection

The John Jacob Collection consists of two parts that document the life and career of attorney and historian, John E. Jacob, Jr.: collected material and personal research. Jacob collected a variety of original documents that comprise series one of the collection, including personal papers of families, ledgers, scrapbooks, land and legal documents, photographs, ephemera, and other paper-based items. Jacob also kept detailed handwritten notes and indices when researching various topics related to the history of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, as well as his handwritten drafts for books and lectures, which comprise series two of the collection. The collection has folder-level descriptions in the inventory.
John Whitney schoolbook
