In the minutes of the Wicomico Red Cross Chapter’s first meeting, on December 8, 1916, the first order of business was the proposal to purchase a Maryland flag for Company I, the National Guard unit from Salisbury.

They purchased a flag for $35 and shipped it, along with other materials, to Company I in Eagle Pass, Texas, as they served on border patrol. The flag traveled with Company I during the war and was eventually donated to the Wicomico Historical Society and is now part of the Nabb Research Center collection.
