Alumni collection

The Salisbury University Alumni Association was founded to “develop and foster an abiding loyalty to Salisbury University; promote a professional and ethical spirit; encourage active participation in all activities that pertain to the betterment and growth of the University; unite graduates and undergraduates in Salisbury University; and take such other actions as may be deemed appropriate to promote the interests and welfare of Salisbury University.” (From the Salisbury University Alumni Association website.) The association achieves their mission by hosting events throughout the country to unite alumni, hosting reunions, and distributing newsletters. The association encourages its members to send notices of nuptials, births, and other lifetime achievements for publishing in the association’s newsletter. The Alumni Collection contains proposed constitutions, Alumni Association history, membership and reunion directories, invitations to reunions and other alumni events, wedding and birth announcements, postcards, ephemera, newspaper clippings, newsletters from 1950 to 2005, and a medal commemorating the completion of the Alumni House in 1996. Documents surrounding the Alumni Association’s induction ceremonies from 1931 to 1951 are present.
Anna Jones Cooper papers

The papers of Anna Jones Cooper document her involvement with Salisbury Teachers College alumni who were enlisted in the different branches of the military during World War II as well as her involvement as head of the STC Alumni Committee. Materials date from 1929-1948 with the bulk of the material dating from 1943-1945, and includes enlisted alumni biographies and addresses, correspondence, and printed materials that feature the enlisted alumni.

The Maryland State Normal School at Salisbury opened in September 1925 as a two-year college to train elementary teachers on the state’s Eastern Shore. The fifth class to graduate was in 1930. This loose scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, photographs, and ephemera related to the State Normal School (now Salisbury University) graduating class of 1930. The scrapbook was collected by Virginia Dryden and presented to the school in 1980 as a celebration of the class’ 50th anniversary. There are approximately 30 photographs of students and faculty going about their daily activities, programs and tickets for various social events, newspaper clippings and Holly Leaf issues, theatre playbills, and materials from the 50th anniversary of the 1930 graduating class.

Oftentimes there are descriptions listed for courses and the development of the curriculum can be traced through the various years.
Minutes of the Faculty
by Faculty of the Maryland Normal School/State Teachers College (1925 – 1952)

In the early years of the Maryland State Normal School, the faculty assumed many of the administrative responsibilities. Besides determining curriculum, the members of the faculty—among other things— formed committees, planned expenditures, planned school trips and social events, managed the extracurricular activities of the students, and coordinated with the other state teachers colleges. The minutes of the faculty document the weekly and bi-weekly meetings of the school’s faculty members from 1925 to 1952. These loose minutes also included associated documents like reports, notes, correspondence, and other ephemera. These meetings demonstrate the broad roles the faculty at the school assumed in addition to their instruction. There is a gap in the records between 1926 and 1931.

This collection contains press releases and newspaper clippings from the Salisbury University Office of Public Relations. The bulk of materials in this collection date from 1956-2019 and consist of press releases, newspaper clippings, and public service announcements either issued by the Office of Public Relations or collected by them. Newspaper clippings include articles about Salisbury University, as well as other regional colleges and universities and topics related to SU. Clippings can also range from a single clipping to multiple articles distributed by numerous news outlets.

The Salisbury University Office of Publications has produced University publications and are responsible for photographs that correspond with articles inside of the publications. The Office of Publications grew out of the Office of Public Relations and is now part of Advancement and External Affairs. This collection consists of nearly all of the photographs taken by the Office of Publications, including slides, negatives, prints, and CDs.

The Academic Council at Salisbury State College (now Salisbury University) was the primary curricular administrative group that approved courses, programs, and submitted academic requirement suggestions to the Board from 1963 to 1981. This collection consists of the minutes of the Academic Council, as well as associated documents that supported their activities including course proposals, program outlines, and reports from subcommittees.
