This Gnome Gnotebook diary was written by Cheryl Lee Bradley in 1979 and provides daily recordings of a woman traveling across the United States. Bradley and her friend traveled through 28 states and Washington, D.C. between March 14 and June 12, beginning and ending in Whittier, California. She collected and pasted ephemera in her diary from various locations during her journey. The diary has been transcribed and can be requested from Nabb Center staff or read on-site.

The Diary of Daniel MacFarlan provides daily entries that detail the daily life of a fire insurance inspector from Yonkers, New York. MacFarlan was very religious and depended on God to endure trouble in the home caused by his drinking and servant, Jennie, as well as a possible lawsuit from the church secretary. MacFarlan traveled for work and wrote, in detail, every day. MacFarlan was from a notable family; his father, Thomas, was a financial agent for Peter Gerard Stuyvesant and Hamilton Fish. There are paintings of MacFarlan and his family in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Diary of E. Amelia White was written between 1850 and 1855, but includes at least one entry from 1866. White lived in North Springfield, Vermont and, during the time of this diary, attended music lessons in Boston, Massachusetts, turned 18, visited New York, and witnessed the devastation of her community from a smallpox epidemic. White also shared her thoughts on religion, death, and culture after she visited Boston. Several pages were removed from the diary. Also included are a lock of hair and two calling cards.

The diary describes Elmus’ work on the farm, family matters, the weather, and local community news. In the summer of 1907, Carmony travelled to Boston, Washington, D.C., and attended the Jamestown Exposition at Norfolk, Virginia.

This diary was written by 19 year old Ethel Burk in 1911. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania woman was a daughter of a wealthy businessman who owned real estate in Atlantic City and a meatpacking business. She commented on the weather, trips she took, as well as her daily activities. These activities were rather extravagant as she wrote about going to dances at night, taking rides in her "machine" (automobile), and even spending time on her family's yacht. Burk also mentioned touring the Lusitania and watching it dock from her hotel room.

This diary was written in 1866 by George Newell, who owned a dry goods store on Hanover Street in Boston, Massachusetts. George and his wife, Hannah, had a child on July 15 and also had four other children. He wrote of thefts, his brother's return from war, attending socials, home repairs, business dealings, visits from relatives and friends, and weather that included a tornado. He went on several trips during the year, including a fishing trip to Portland, Maine and a visit to New York City where he toured Central Park, attended an auction, and went to Brooklyn.

The Diary of G.S. Fisher documents the journey of a woman from Braintree, Massachusetts to Camp Gordon in Augusta, Georgia, where her son, Richard, was stationed. Fisher, who traveled sometime around 1942, wrote extensive comments on southern lifestyle, African Americans, landscapes, and the general surroundings throughout her entire journey. There are photographs pasted throughout the diary, some presumably taken by Fisher and others collected as souvenirs. Fisher traveled by train through the states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and eventually visited New York to meet someone named Russell.

This diary was written from 1856 to 1857 by John Shaw of Portland, Maine. The journal is written in two different sides. The first side was written in 1856 and includes Shaw's thoughts on religion and Christianity, as well as his observations while visiting Syracuse, New York, Boston, and Chicago. The second side begins with "Thoughts" that include several pages of writings followed by journal entries from Chicago in 1857. Included on this side are also transcriptions of a couple of letters Shaw wrote to a newspaper editor, one of which detailed his opinions about the upcoming presidential election between Buchanan and Pierce. Shaw also wrote about his beliefs on the question of slavery and commented on the ongoing North-South arguments that led to the Civil War.
