Abstract

The Peninsula General Hospital Records documents the hospital’s administrative business from 1968 to1974. Peninsula General Hospital, now called TidalHealth Peninsula Regional, has served the Salisbury area since its opening in 1897. These records include newsletters, articles, minutes and information from committee meetings, financial and statistical reports, correspondence, information from their School of Nursing and School of Medical Technology, and proposed program plans.

Administrative History

Peninsula General Hospital, located in Salisbury, MD, first opened in 1897 with 9 available beds for patients, according to their 1970 informational booklet. The hospital was founded by Dr. George W. Todd, a Delmar local and the country doctor at the time. Dr. Todd frequently made house calls, however the growing Salisbury population led to the need for a town hospital. He enlisted the help of senators and businessmen, who made his dream a reality. The building had grown tremendously since its initial opening, to over 300 patient beds by 1970. The hospital has offered a School of Nursing and School of Medical Technology. Dr. Todd’s grandson, Dr. George W. Todd, successfully completed the hospital’s first open-heart surgery in 1974, along with Dr. Richard Hughes.

The Peninsula General Hospital Records documents the hospital’s administrative business from 1968 to 1974. Peninsula General Hospital, now called TidalHealth Peninsula Regional, has served the Salisbury area since its opening in 1897. These records include the newsletters PGH Intercom and Update, minutes and information from committee meetings, financial and statistical reports, information from their School of Nursing and School of Medical Technology, and proposed program plans. There is also correspondence to and from Dr. Norman Crawford, the president of Salisbury University (then known as Salisbury State College), serving from 1970-1979, as well as to and from Dr. Walter D. Smith, Oscar Carey, and Donald J. Jacobs.
