Abstract

The 29th Infantry Division Newsletter collection consists of the Chinstrap and Twenty-Niner newsletters created for veterans of the 29th Infantry Division. The newsletters range from 1993 – 2020 and advertise reunions, charity drives, and memorials.

Administrative History

The 29th Infantry Division U.S. Army has served in WWI and WWII as well as the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Known as the “Blue and Gray Division,” the 29th Infantry Division is currently an Army National Guard unit consisting of members from Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia. They operate out of Fort Belvoir, Virginia. The 29th Infantry was first formed in 1917 and was subsequently deployed to France as part of the American Expeditionary Force. During WWII, the 29th Infantry’s 116th Regiment was part of the first wave of Operation Neptune (Normandy Landings). The unit was also deployed during operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq.

Scope and Content Note

The 29th Infantry Newsletter collection consists of two newsletters: The Twenty-Niners and Chinstrap. Both newsletters are based in the Southern Maryland region and were originally mailed to members of the 29th Division Association. They provide details about those who served in the 29th Infantry and contain accounts of veterans and their loved ones during deployment. The newsletters range from November 1993 to September 2020 and include articles such as post reports, narratives, pictures, song lyrics, correspondence, and tributes to those who have passed. Many of the articles highlight experiences during World War I and World War II and are written by members of the Association.
