Abstract

The papers of Ernest T. Foskey document his experience as a member of the Company I, 29th Division, 115th Infantry, United States Army during the First World War, 1917-1919. Activities are documented through a series of extensive correspondence written to his mother, Maggie Foskey Lemon(s) of 414 Davis Street, Salisbury, Maryland.

Biographical History

Ernest T. Foskey (1898-1997), was born near Lowes Cross Roads, Sussex County, Delaware, to Philip Parron and Maggie Tyre Foskey. Ernest served in the First World War, a member of Company I, 29th Division, 115th Infantry, United States Army; he saw combat in France. Foskey was employed by the city of Salisbury, Maryland as a member of the police force, and lastly an electrician and meter attendant. He married Gertrude E. (1904-2003), on January 22, 1920; together they had one daughter, Joyce M. Foskey Barlowe (1924-1978).

Maggie Tyre Foskey Lemon (1866-1953), was the daughter of Thomas and Julie Tyre; she married Phillip P. Foskey (1867-?), a farmer, they had five children, Elijah, Edith, Minnie, Virgil, and Ernest. Foskey left Maggie widowed around the turn of the twentieth century, and she married George Samuel Lemon(s) in August of 1901.

Scope and Content Note

This digital collection documents the soldier’s experience during the First World War through the eyes of Eastern Shore native, Ernest T. Foskey. Through a series of correspondence to his mother, Maggie Lemons, Foskey writes of his health, the weather, his experience in the trenches, and his longing for home or news from home. The series of correspondence provides one man’s perspective of military service, 1917-1919.
