Abstract

The Records of the Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons​ contains blueprints, meeting notes, newspaper articles, and various correspondences surrounding the construction of the Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons that range from 1998 to 2016. Plans for a new library began in 2006 with a Library Program Part I that outlined the goals of what the new library should accomplish and then finally in 2016, ten years later, the Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons​ opened its doors to Salisbury University students and staff. The records include information on the design process and the various meetings through the construction from 2014 to 2016. The collection is mainly centered around the various design and construction blueprints, but also includes design catalogs, emails discussing safety measures for the building, and price bids.

Administrative History

When Salisbury Normal School (now Salisbury University) opened in 1925, the campus library was housed in the main building (now Holloway Hall). As the student population increased and the collections grew, the necessity for a larger library became apparent. The College Library built adjacent to Holloway Hall was constructed in 1957 and later dedicated as Blackwell Library in 1966. In 1975, the building underwent renovations that significantly altered the appearance and furniture of the library.

The library included different satellite departments across campus including the Curriculum Resource Center (formerly the Curriculum Laboratory), Instructional Design and Delivery, and the Campus Elementary School Library.

In 2013, the Guerierri Family Foundation gifted Salisbury University $8 million to build an academic commons, which would become the central hub for students and house the library and other support departments. 

The Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons opened in the fall of 2016 and became the new home of the Salisbury University Libraries. In addition to traditional library services, the GAC also houses the Center for Student Acheivement, the Writing Center, the Mathematics and Computer Science Tutoring Program, the Office for Instructional Design and Delivery, the IT HelpDesk, the Graduate Commons, Hungry Minds Express, Chesapeake Roastery, and the Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture.

Scope and Content Note

The Records of the Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons​ contain blueprints, meeting notes, financial records and estimates, newspaper articles, and various correspondences surrounding the construction of the Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons. The collection ranges from 1998 to 2016 with the bulk of the records ranging form 2012 to 2015. 

The first series, Construction Project Manuals, includes the various manuals and documents discussing the details of the construction and design process of the Academic Commons.

The second series, Planning Materials includes meeting notes, correspondence from Dr. Beatriz Hardy (Dean of Libraries) and Dr. Ray Thompson (Director of the Nabb Research Center) discussing details of the new building, newspaper articles about funding for and the design of the Academic Commons, financial records, inventories, and blueprints.

Arrangement Statement

The collection is arranged into two series:

(Series 1) Construction Project Manuals: includes the various manuals and documents discussing the details of the construction and design process of the Academic Commons.

(Series 2) Building Planning: includes meeting notes, correspondence, newspaper articles, financial records, inventories, and blueprints.
