This collection centers around the academic life of Wilcomb E. Washburn, containing his personal correspondence and academic notes from his career at Dartmouth College, Harvard University, and the Smithsonian Institute. The vast majority of the collection consists of historic portraits of Native Americans, academic notes and papers, and personal correspondence.
Wilcomb E. Washburn was born in 1915, and served in World War II as a Japanese language officer in the United States Marine Corps. Returning to college after the war, Washburn graduted from Dartmouth in 1948, and completed his PhD at Harvard in 1953. After leaving Harvard, he taught at the College of William & Mary before joining the Smithsonian Institution as a Curator in the Political History Division in 1958, later serving as the Chair of the Department of American Studies and served as the Director of the Independent American Studies Program at the Smithsonian after 1968.
In a long career of academic research and publication, Wilcomb E. Washburn was the editor or coeditor of nine works and was the author of six books, one of which, The Governor and the Rebel (1957) overturned the traditional views held about Bacon's Rebellion based on evidence he uncovered while undertaking research in England. He would aso contribute to the emerging field of ethnohistory, and served as President for the American Society of Ethnohistory from 1957-1958. In his later life, he joined the American Anthropological Association in 1960, and would remain a member until his death in 1997.
Wilcomb E. Washburn died at age 72 only a month after he retired from the Smithsonian.
Wilcomb E. Washburn (1925-1997) was an American soldier, author, and historian, serving as a program director of the Smithsonian Institution, a former president of the Historical Society of Washington, and a professor at American University, George Washington University, and University of Maryland. Washburn was a graduate of Dartmouth College, and received his PhD from Harvard University. The collection largely covers Washburn's academic life at Darthmouth and Harvard, and his work with the Smithsonian; with additional materials covering editorials, the Christopher Columbus 500 celebrations, and his career as a civil affairs officer in the United States Marine Corps.
This collection is organized into three series, covering Wilcomb Washburn’s personal materials, printed & publicized materials, and his extensive collection of photographs, mainly historic pictures of Native Americans. Series 1 is divided into several subsections: correspondence, academic notes, notecards, and papers by Wilcomb Washburn. Series 2 is divided into subsections detailing academic journals, government reports, Native American materials and art, books & magazines, newspapers, scripts & drafts, copies of archival materials, White House materials, brochures & pamphlets, Columbus Quincentenary materials, military materials, and notebooks. Series 3 is concerned with Wilcomb Washburn's photograph collection, consisting of general photos, Native American photos, family photos, and photo albums.
