Joseph Moore, a Berlin, Worcester County, Maryland attorney, devoted the better part of 20-plus years to researching and writing on the trial and outcome of the murder of Green Davis and his family by Euel Lee aka Orphan Jones, 1863-2006. The series of documents culminated in the publication, “Murder on Maryland’s Eastern Shore: Race, politics, and the Case of Orphan Jones”. Records document the proceedings of the events surrounding the Davis family murders. Presentments and court materials by Lee’s attorney Bernard Ades with corresponding newspaper accounts reflect the legal proceedings of confessed murderer Euel Lee / Orphan Jones, and his ultimate death by lynching in the Baltimore County Jail, 1933. Records within this set also reflect Moore’s vested interest in Worcester County history, including the Henry and Dirickson families, as well as the Civil War, specifically Purnell’s Legion, and the freedmen of color who served for the Union and Confederate Armies. Photostatic copies of manumissions, and general enrollment records for the duration of the war, as well as an original receipt for enslaved persons in 1863, reveal Moore’s commitment to Worcester County, Maryland.
Joseph E. Moore (b. 1942), born in Berlin, Maryland; he attended Worcester County schools and graduated from Stephen Decatur High School. After high school, he attended Wesley College (Dover, Del.), and earned an Associate of Arts Degree; Moore went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland, College Park. In the Fall of 1965, Moore began studying for his law degree at the University of Maryland School of Law, where he graduated with Bachelor of Laws in 1968. Moore has served as the States Attorney for Worcester County; Attorney for the Worcester County Zoning Appeals; Attorney for the town of Berlin; and the Ocean Pines Association. Presently, Moore is a partner of Williams, Moore, Shockley, & Harrison, LLP. In 2003, Moore was selected as a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the premier legal organizations in the United States. He is married to Susan Connelly Moore, they have two daughters, Melissa and Jennifer.
Series I: Murder on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, 1931-1934, 2002-2006; document the extensive research of Joseph Moore, and included within the record set are the original court records and telegram communications on Lee as well as corresponding newspaper clippings, associated research articles, and the aftermath on Maryland’s Eastern Shore with the lynchings of Matthew Williams and George Armwood. Of particular note are the disbarment records of Lee’s attorney, Bernard Ades, as well as a photostatic copy of his FBI file.
Series II: Civil War Research, 1863-1870, 1890, 2002; documents the soldiers of color from Worcester County, Maryland through photostatic copies of manumissions, and enrollment records. Records also indicate soldiers and widow pensions collected during the 1890 census; the focus of the materials is on Smith’s Independent Cavalry, and William Pitts. Of particular note are the series of records relating to Lemuel and William Showell in St. Martins (Berlin), Maryland. Records document the transfer of enslaved people in January of 1863, as well as the Showell’s merchant business.
Series III: Worcester County records, 1849, 1873-1930; documents different families who resided in Worcester County during the late 19th and 20th centuries. Joseph Moore acquired many of these papers through auction or from clients. Correspondence, photographs and ephemera from the Dirickson, Henry, Law, and Rogers families are featured throughout the series. Of particular interest is a handwritten letter from Maryland statesman Reverdy Johnson, who gained fame during the Dred Scott Case.
Series IV: Published Materials, 1938-1973, 1989; features a series of Life and Look magazines collected by Joseph Moore. Topics featured throughout the publications include the Second World War, the Civil War, President Nixon, and the Vietnam War.
