The papers of Polly Stewart document her educational work as well as her research and dedication to folklore and folklife on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and other cultural groups from 1964-2013, with the bulk of the material dating from her professorship at Salisbury University, 1974-2000. The material contains teaching notes from courses at Salisbury University including literature, mythology, as well as LGBTQ and Feminism studies, research materials on lynchings, folklore, folklife, cultural exploration, and her records of participation in a variety of societies such as the Maryland Folklore Festival.
Polly Stewart (1944-2013), Folklorist was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Justin and Martha Stewart. A bright girl, she attended the William M. Stewart School, East High and the University of Utah where she took part in plays and developed her ability as a folk singer. She married Charles Deemer of Eugene, Oregon in 1966 and later divorced; they had one daughter, Kate. Polly went on to earn her Ph.D. at the University of Oregon, where she focused on medieval studies and folklore becoming the first graduate student of Barre Toelken. In 1973, Polly accepted the position of Assistant Professor at Salisbury University, Salisbury, Maryland where she taught courses in folk life, folk literature, world mythology, Chaucer, and Norse literature. During her tenure, she presented at the Northern Rockies Folk Festival; served as Co-Director of the Maryland Folk Life Festival and the Annual Conference on Teaching of Folklore and Folk Life in the Public Schools of Maryland; Director of the Eastern Shore Folk Life Festival and a consultant to the Bicentennial Oral History Project. Polly returned to Salt Lake City after her retirement from Salisbury University in 2004. She remained active in many organizations including the Salt Lake Choral Society, and served as a mentor to members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning community.

Series II: Campus Programs document the differing types of initiatives and participatory activities Polly Stewart participated in at Salisbury University.
Series III: Folk Groups, documents, articles and notes on varying groups studied or garnered interest by Polly Stewart.
Series IV: Folklore Genres, series include articles on customs, folk music, narratives, poetry, religions, material culture, documenting a wide variety of traditional genres.
Series V: Folklore Articles and Readings, document folk tradition through a series of readings including those on the Delmarva region including decorative carvings, shanty boats, and the importance of folk tradition.
Series VI: Maryland Folklore Society document the activities of the society including membership, meeting minutes, articles of incorporation, bylaws, financial records and the newsletter titled, The Snallygaster.
Series VII: Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture document meeting minutes and memoranda from when Polly served as a co-director of the institution.
Series VIII: Professional Activities document the wide variety of societies in which Polly was a participatory member.
Series IX: Research documents the variety of interests in which Polly Stewart conducted her personal research interests including lynching and ethnic identity on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, worldviews, the American West, and regional consciousness.
Series X: Teaching documents the vast topical coursework Polly taught during her tenure at Salisbury University including literature, mythology, women’s issues and LGBTQ studies, feminism, Delmarva Folk Life and folklore.
Series XI: Folklife Festivals document Polly’s participation in many different festivals including the Delmarva Folk Life Festival and the Eastern Shore Folk Life Festival and her intent to glean information from participants through interviews, photographs, recordings and slides.
Series XII: Folklore Education document educational resources for teaching folklife, lore and ways through curriculum guidelines, exhibits, articles and guides.
Series XIII: Folklore and Folklife Publications includes newsletters and magazines from various folklore and folklife societies and organizations.
