Abstract

The S. Norris Pilchard III papers consist of the personal papers of S. Norris Pilchard III, and his family and local ephemera from circa 1861 to 1974. The collection contains advertising, correspondence, photographs, periodicals and ephemera offering insight into the Gunby family and into business and civic life on the Delmarva Peninsula. It includes photographs of L.W. Gunby and of Joseph A. Graham, the editor of the Kansas City Times. It also includes a notebook of original poetry by S. Norris Pilchard Jr. and correspondence and periodicals from S. Norris Pilchard III's service in the United States’ Navy during the Second World War.

Biographical History

Sewell Norris Pilchard III was born on June 20, 1923 in Salisbury, Maryland. He was the son of Dr. Sewell Norris Pilchard Jr. and Louise Gunby, who divorced in 1936. Pilchard was educated at the Severn School and attended Washington College and The Citadel. He served as an Aviation Electrician’s Mate in the United States’ Navy in the Pacific Theater during the Second World War. He married Mary Ann Morris in 1947; the couple had two children, a son, Chip Pilchard, and a daughter, Carol Graham. Two other children, Kirk Pilchard and Karen Pilchard, died as infants. Pilchard was the grandson of L.W. Gunby and a longtime employee of L.W. Gunby Company. He was a member of the Jaycees, the Wicomico County Historical Society, and he served as an elder for Wicomico Presbyterian Church. Pilchard died on March 9, 1995 in Salisbury.

Scope and Content Note

The collection documents the personal life and family genealogy of S. Norris Pilchard III.

Series I. Gunby Family contains the personal papers of S. Norris Pilchard III and of his family from circa 1861 to 1972. It contains a civic award from Salisbury Chamber of Commerce to L.W. Gunby from 1935, and an invitation to the 100th Anniversary of L.W. Gunby Company in 1972.

Series II. Ephemera contains ephemera from 1895 to 1974. It contains a blank election ballot from the Third Election District of Wicomico County, Maryland in 1895 and a program from the Seventh Annual Ward Foundation Exhibit in 1974.
