The L.W. Gunby papers consist of the personal papers of L.W. Gunby and of his family and of the records of his businesses on the Delmarva Peninsula from 1845 to 1991. The collection contains financial ledgers and hundreds of letters, deeds, mortgages, stock certificates and tax returns, offering insight into a century of economic life on the Delmarva Peninsula. It includes the testimonial of Rev. George Handy Wailes on the occasion of Gunby’s selection as Salisbury’s Man of the Year in 1936. Wailes, the Visiting Professor of Hebrew at Princeton Theological Seminary, honors Gunby’s business and civic contributions to the city of Salisbury. The collection also includes a scrapbook commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Gunby’s Hardware in 1972.
Louis White Gunby was born on March 5, 1854, in Forktown (now Fruitland) in Somerset (now Wicomico) County, Maryland. He was the son of John K. and Charlotte Somers Gunby, and a descendant of Colonel John Gunby. His brothers John W. Gunby and Frank M. Gunby served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. His sister Clara Gunby was a Confederate sympathizer, imprisoned at Fort Monroe, Virginia. Gunby briefly attended Salisbury Academy, but left school at the age of 13 to clerk in the hardware store of John H. White on Main Street in Salisbury, Maryland. In 1872, he purchased the business and renamed it Gunby’s Hardware. On September 18, 1876, he married Fannie Alice Graham. The couple had nine children: Graham Gunby, Alice Gunby Fooks, Louise Gunby Pilchard, Louis M. Gunby, Francis M. Gunby, Ruth Lyon Gunby, Louis W. Gunby, John Kirk Gunby and Joseph Young Gunby. Gunby’s Hardware was destroyed in the Great Salisbury Fire of 1886. Gunby rebuilt in 1888 and prospered. With four floors, a stone and glass front, and 25,000 square feet of floor space, the new Gunby’s Hardware was the largest wholesale and retail hardware and home furnishings store south of Wilmington, Delaware. Gunby built a large Queen Anne style home at 507 Camden Avenue in Salisbury and purchased his mother’s family home on Shad Point in Somerset County, which he named Cherry Hill. He commuted to and from his country estate on one of the first gasoline powered motor boats on the Eastern Shore. He invested in real estate and stocks, and incorporated his businesses as the L.W. Gunby Company in 1903. He purchased two buildings on Camden Avenue, one for manufacturing machinery for canneries and sawmills, and the other for selling automobiles. Gunby Motor Company and Gunby Nash Motor Company operated from 1924 to 1936 and sold Auburn, Ford, Buick, Dodge and Nash automobiles. Gunby also founded the holding company L.W. Gunby, Inc. and purchased the Poco-Wico Manufacturing Company, manufacturing baskets, and crates for local produce. Gunby stood at the center of business and civic life on the Delmarva Peninsula. He served as the Director of the Farmers’ and Merchants’ Bank; the Director of the Salisbury Realty Company; the President of the Salisbury Building and Loan Association; the Chairman of the Delmarva Mortgage Corporation; and a member of the Board of Trade. Gunby was not only business-minded but also civic-minded. He served as the President of the Wicomico County Board of Education and as the Principal of Sunday School of the Wicomico County Presbyterian Church. Rev. George Handy Wailes remarked that Gunby was “so interlaced with the community that his name is a household word and he has spread the fame of Salisbury to adjacent states.” Gunby retired in 1946, and he died on February 21, 1951. His obituary in the Salisbury Advertiser referred to him as the city’s “Grand Old Man.”
The collection documents the business and civic life of L.W. Gunby and of the Gunby family.
