Abstract

The Caroline Gunby and Eleanor Gunby Watts papers document the travels and fifty year teaching career of Caroline Gunby and the genealogical research of her niece, Eleanor Gunby Watts. The eclectic collection from Somerset County, Md. dates from 1845 to 1999, with the bulk from 1920 to 1956. It includes a doctor’s bill for the treatment of slaves in 1845, historical records from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Marion, Md., and Caroline Gunby’s cross-country travel diary from 1939.

Biographical History

Born on August 3, 1887, Caroline (Carrie) Gunby was the daughter of Charles E. Gunby (1853-1904) and Emma F. Lankford (1852-1932). She was born in Marion, Md. and attended the Marion School. She was educated at The Asheville Normal and Associated Schools, Asheville, North Carolina and at the Maryland State Teacher’s College, now Salisbury University, Salisbury, Md.  She taught at the Marion School from 1906 to 1956, and was known for her efforts to raise money to send local students to college. She was a member of the parish at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Marion, Md. and served as the Warden, the Treasurer and a member of the Vestry. She died on October 19, 1963. The Caroline L. Gunby Scholarship Fund was endowed in her honor.

Born in Somerset County, Md. on December 2, 1909, Eleanor Gunby Watts was the daughter of Paul L. Gunby (1882-1971) and Jesse A. Wilkins (1884-1951) and the niece of Caroline Gunby. She was educated at Western Maryland College, now McDaniel College. Married first to John Day (1908-1936) and then to James Leslie Watts (1910- 1992,) she was a genealogist and the last Gunby to occupy the original family land tract in Somerset County, which dates to the 17th century. Mrs. Watts died on December 23, 2006.
