The Humphreys family papers document the educational and social activities of Dr. Eugene and Josephine Humphreys and their children who lived at 105 Broad Street, Salisbury, Maryland. Materials date from 1867-1963 with the bulk of the material dating from 1890-1933 including correspondence, educational, economic and photographic materials of the family. Also documented through correspondence, legal records, and photographs are boarders who resided with the Humphreys and associated families including Mary Gordon Toadvine, Joseph and Mary Graham and John D. Williams.
Dr. Eugene W. Humphreys (1848-1907) and his wife, M. Josephine Humphreys Tarr (1851-1939) residents of Salisbury, Maryland were married in October of 1869. Dr. Humphreys was educated at Princeton University where he received his medical degree in 1869, he returned to Salisbury where he practiced medicine and served as the medical examiner. The Humphreys lived at 105 Broad Street in Salisbury; there they had five children, Lucy Eugenie (1870-1898), R. Parsons (1874-1898), E. Dudley (1878-1928), Mary Elizabeth (1881-1975), Nelly Rock (1884-1953), and M. Josephine (1889-1889). Lucy would go on to marry Richard Steuart of Baltimore who was a columnist for the Baltimore Sun and wrote under the alias Carroll Dulaney. Over the course of several years the Humphreys family hosted many boarders in their home including Mary Gordon Toadvine. The family participated in many local activities and social clubs.
The Humphreys Family papers contain and document the activities of the family from Salisbury, Maryland; the papers have been arranged into four series: FAMILY FILES, ASSOCIATED FAMILIES, ASSOCIATED BUSINESSES and VISUAL MATERIALS.
