Abstract: The Albert Laws papers consist of the official and personal records of Albert Laws, and the family records of Margaret Laws Engle, Victor Laws Jr., and Maude Perdue Laws Truitt. The collection documents Albert Laws’ career as an officer in the United States Army, including his service in the Spanish American War and in the Philippine-American War from 1889-1908. The papers include a photograph album and ephemera from the West Point Class of 1893; correspondence, documents and photographs of the 24th US Infantry and 35th Infantry, USV; an eyewitness account of the Battle of San Juan Hill; and a proclamation signed by Emilio Aguinaldo, the first President of the Philippines. The papers also include Albert Laws’ personal correspondence from 1889-1908, with notes by his niece, Margaret Laws Engle. The collection also documents the family genealogy of the Bacon, Laws and Truitt families of Sussex County, Delaware and Wicomico and Worcester Counties, Maryland from 1795-1997. The papers include the personal correspondence and financial records of William L. Laws from 1853-1924 and genealogical notes from Margaret Laws Engle, Victor Laws Jr and Maude Perdue Laws Truitt. The papers also include a survey from 1795, records of the 30th Virginia Infantry Regiment, CSA from 1862 and a business ledger from 1864-1896.

The Clyde Gilbert Truitt collection includes numerous photographs, documents, newspaper clippings, and handwritten information cards detailing Clyde G. Truitt’s military service in World War I. Other local men’s military careers are also included in this collection, but the main focus of the collection is on Clyde Truitt. Information surrounding Clyde’s family is present in the collection. Documents pertaining to Truitt’s family include birth certificates, wedding announcements, report cards, and other genealogical documents. A vast majority of the collection is made up of photographs. Half of the photographs detail Truitt’s military experience, while the other half depict the Truitt family, the Truitt family home, and Clyde’s career with the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company.

The Thomas W. Davis papers document the activities of the Davis, Truitt, and Dennis families of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, including Pittsville and Salisbury of Wicomico County, and Ocean City, of Worcester County. Additionally, photographs documenting their time spent in Claiborne, Maryland and Wauchula, Florida. The materials date from 1880-1970 with the bulk of the material dating from 1910-1945. The Davis family is documented through photographs, including tintypes, artifacts, baptismal certificates, newspaper clippings, an autograph book, bank check and receipt and other ephemera.
