Frank Dunbaugh Papers

The Frank Dunbaugh Papers document the activity of a Major in the United States Army immediately following the Second World War. Dunbaugh commanded the Allied Military Government (AMG) in the Hersbruck district of post-war Germany. He discussed how his unit identified former Nazi party members, the interrogation of S.S. officers at a castle, a riot in a Polish refugee camp, the mistreatment of civilians and rape of women, American soldiers being ambushed, American G.I.'s mistreating local civilians and German police, encounters with Russian officers, and meeting concentration and labor camp survivors.

French Merci Train Gifts

The French Merci Train gifts were sent on the French freighter Magellan inside 49 antique, narrow gauge boxcars for each of the United States (one split between Hawaii and District of Columbia) as gratitude for the American Friendship Train that toured the United States to raise $40 million worth of food and clothing for French people. In 1949, Mary Laura Francis was sent from the school, then called State Teachers College, to collect the gifts selected for Salisbury University.

German and Nazi Stereoviews

These German and Nazi Stereoviews consist of two separate collections of stereoview photographs that were collected by a U.S. Army colonel. Included are two stereoview finders. The first collection of photographs depict the Third Reich's military might and Nazi Party ceremonial events. These 73 photographs, of which there were originally 100, are described in German on the versos, which was translated by the wife of the Colonel who collected the stereoviews. The other collection consists of 36 photographs that show the United States-occupied zone of Germany, which are identified in English.

Japanese Military Scenes Lithographs

These 20 lithograph prints from 1942 depict Second World War military scenes from the Japanese perspective. Annotations were made on the verso of several prints, which explain the scene from the Japanese perspective. Scenes depicted include: the naval battle at Java with Imperial Japanese Naval Forces attacking the U.S.-Dutch combined fleet, Japanese warplanes over Singapore, Borneo Campaign and Tarakan Island, attack on Tarakan Island, Japanese destroyers firing at enemy cruisers, night operations at the Battle of Savo Island, capture of American prisoners on Wake Island, naval battle at Java Sea, Japanese submarine torpedo attack against the U.S. carrier Lexington West of Hawaii, Japanese fleet's arrival at Singapore, naval battle off Bali Island, and operations at the Singapore Naval port shortly after its capture.

Japanese Prints and Books

This collection consists of various Japanese prints and books that primarily date during the Second World War, but include items from 1881 and the early twentieth century. Included is one picture album containing 60 lithographs that depict war caricatures from the Second World War, a woodblock print picture postcard set from shortly after the Second World War that depicts the United States' occupation of Japan, a circa 1907 palmistry, physiognomy, and divination guidebook with illustrations, a world heritage shrines and temples of Nikko picture map from the 1920s, a set of three encyclopedias that document ancient Japanese history from 1881, and 15 prints that depict Japanese propaganda art.

Japanese Second World War Commemorative Postcards

Jeanne Severance Letters

This collection consists of letters from Jeanne Severance, a Red Cross volunteer, to Martha and Constance Greene from 1945 to 1946. Severance wrote from and reported on events in the many places she served, which included France, India, China, Myanmar, and Mexico. Several letters were censored by the United States Army. Also included are photographs of the Greenes in 1962 and some newspaper clippings. At the time, the Greenes had opened the office of Martha Greene real estate company on Long Island in Montauk, New York; there are several pictures of Martha in front of the original offices. The transcription of the letters is attached.
