This collection contains one issue of the Dutch underground newspaper, Vrij Nederland (Free Netherlands), which was printed circa 1942 during the German occupation of Holland in the Second World War. It contains translated text sections welcoming allied soldiers and cartoons including one of Adolf Hitler crying.
Walter Gustafson Letters

Walter Gustafson's letters detail his work on Abadan Island, Iran (likely for the oil company that became British Petroleum) between 1943 and 1944. Gustafson began in the United Kingdom, traveled to Cairo, Egypt, and spent several months in Iran. Through several extensive letters sent to his sisters in Chicago, Illinois, Gustafson provided detailed descriptions of the local people and their customs, as well as the several week voyage back to the United States beginning with the Persian Gulf and Suez Canal. Much of the content written is self-censored and he frequently told his sisters that he would tell everything when he returned. The correspondence includes photographs, as well as one postcard of Gustafson by the Tigris River.

The World War II Veterans project records document orally and written the histories of Wicomico County, Maryland men and women who served in the differing branches of the military during World War II. Written and audio evidence documents the veteran’s enlistment, rank, military unit, and where they were stationed for the duration of the war. Records were collected by Sylvia Bradley and the Westside Historical Society in 1995 with subsequent records periodically added in 1996.
Young H.E. Hitch papers

The Young H.E. Hitch papers consist of the correspondence and papers of Young HE Hitch and members of the Hitch family. The collection documents Hitch’s life as a farmer in South Carolina and his experiences as a private in the Confederate Army. The papers include a mathematical workbook dating from 1814 and belonging to Hitch’s father, Joseph Hitch. The workbook is lined with newsprint from 1803, with notices of the Louisiana Purchase and advertisements for the recapture of runaway slaves. The papers also include a journal of Hitch’s farm work from 1858; a receipt for the purchase of Confederate bonds; examples of Confederate postage stamps; and dozens of letters written by Hitch to his wife and sons while he served in the Confederate Army.
