Acquisition	The Young H.E. Hitch papers were donated to the Nabb Research Center by Michael G. Hitch and Elinor H. Mowbray in 2015 and 2017. The collection served as the basis for the book, Oh Lordy!: A Story of One Family’s Trials During the Struggle for Southern Independence As Told Through the Letters of Private Young H.E. Hitch Company I, 16th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry by Michael G. Hitch and Elinor H. Mowbray. The book contains transcriptions of some of the letters in the collection. Some letters in the book are not included in the collection, while some included in the collection are not in the book.

Abstract

The Young H.E. Hitch papers consist of the correspondence and papers of Young HE Hitch and members of the Hitch family. The collection documents Hitch’s life as a farmer in South Carolina and his experiences as a private in the Confederate Army. The papers include a mathematical workbook dating from 1814 and belonging to Hitch’s father, Joseph Hitch. The workbook is lined with newsprint from 1803, with notices of the Louisiana Purchase and advertisements for the recapture of runaway slaves. The papers also include a journal of Hitch’s farm work from 1858; a receipt for the purchase of Confederate bonds; examples of Confederate postage stamps; and dozens of letters written by Hitch to his wife and sons while he served in the Confederate Army.

Biographical History

Young Henry Elkanah Hitch was born on August 30, 1825 in Laurens County, South Carolina. His parents were Joseph N. Hitch, formerly of Somerset County, Maryland, and Rosanna Hitch. Hitch farmed in Laurens County. He married Mary Ann Edwards in 1847. The couple had two sons, John Joseph Hitch and Augustus Lucian Hitch. Hitch served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He enlisted as a private in the 9th South Carolina Reserves on November 17, 1862 and served for 90 days. On February 13, 1863, he enlisted in Company I, 16th South Carolina Infantry for the duration of the war. The 16th was raised in Laurens County and was referred to as the Greenville Regiment. It was commanded by Col. James McCullough, and was in a brigade commanded by Brig. Gen. States Rights Gist. Hitch served at Jackson, Mississippi during the Vicksburg Campaign and at Chattanooga, Tennessee during the Chickamauga Campaign in 1863. In 1864, Hitch served in Georgia during the Atlanta Campaign. He fought at the Battles of Resaca, Kingston, Cartersville and Dallas. On June 19, 1864, Hitch was killed in a skirmish at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia. His body was never recovered.
