The Young H.E. Hitch papers were donated to the Nabb Research Center by Michael G. Hitch and Elinor H. Mowbray in 2015 and 2017.

The collection served as the basis for the book, Oh Lordy!: A Story of One Family’s Trials During the Struggle for Southern Independence As Told Through the Letters of Private Young H.E. Hitch Company I, 16th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry by Michael G. Hitch and Elinor H. Mowbray. The book contains transcriptions of some of the letters in the collection. Some letters in the book are not included in the collection, while some included in the collection are not in the book.
