June 14th Mr Kenney spent the morning with me and read while I served. He and father figured out that we are related to him, how, I dont know.

[June ]15th Sallie and I spent the day with Annie Willet. We went over to the new home that Henry Johnson is building opposite Annie's home, Lizzie Henry his wife was there[;] we had a long talk with her. I do not imagine he is a kind husband, and that she is happy with all his money. He is a spoiled son, with an unhappy disposition, some days he pouts all day. I always like Lizzie, sorry if she has risked all and lost.

Dan and Sarah, Jane and Gordon, Moddie & Mr W came in the evening. We all walked home. He said coming home, "My little Emily" may I say that? I said ....

[June ]16th Ellen Covington, Lizzie Ryder & Maggie Marshall spent the evening with me[.]

[June ]19th This is Miss Mary's wedding day. I went over in the evening and helped them a little. Eliza and Dan, Sallie and Mr Geo. Gray, Sarah and Sid Lane waited on them. They were married about 9, and after a fine supper the bride and groom drove up to their house on the hill, formerly the home of James Derickson Sr. and where Dr Jim Derickson was born. Mr G. W. Staton the groom has three daughters Lizzie, Georgie and Alice.

[June ]21st Went to Mr and Mrs Staton's reception. There were quite a number of friends, paying their respects[.] Did not make me want to get married one little bit. After staying a while, we took a drive in the country. He says "he never has a chance to talk to me only when we are away from home, as there is always a crowd there." Mrs Staton wore a dove-colored silk.

June 23rd Eliza, Maggie Mumford and Lit Bowen took tea here, also Sarah Fooks and Henry Davis. Albert wrote that he has been promoted, and would go to another post.

[June ]26th Dan spent the evening with me, he is a true friend of mine and Mr W. s altho' we never talk of him.

[June ]28th Mr W. spent the evening. I was sitting on the stool of the piano, just as he was about to go, when he told me that he loved me so tenderly, so truly, that there was no risk, nor trouble that would be too much for him to take for me. He is the only one I allow to talk to me that way, and he is so sincere. I am not worth it, for I do not feel altogther that way.

July 1st 1861 Annie Rayne, Sallie and Mr Kenney spent the morning with me. Mr W. came in the evening, was very sweet and so good and kind.

[July ]3rd The bride and groom (Mr and Mrs Staton), Lit, Dan, Moddie, Sid Lane, Gordon Marshall, Sarah B. and Jane, Margaretta, Mr W. and myself spent the evening at Sallie's. It was in honor of the mature Couple that we were invited.

[July ]4th Jimmy Rider and Maggie Mumford, John Dale and Delia Townsend, Joshua Carey and Amelia, Henry Pitts and Annie Willet, Mr W. and myself all went down to Jimmy Carey's for supper. We did not cross the bay but enjoyed ourselves at the House. Had a nice ride home he called me his "darling Emily".

[July ]7th Dan, Sarah and Jane, Moddie and Margaretta, Sallie and Sid Lane, Mr W, and myself spent the evening with the Bride and groom. She seemed perfectly at home. He did n't seem lover-like at all. I should want my husband to follow my every movement with a loving glance but he is not young and she has always been matter-of-fact, so that may account for it.
