Abstract

These oral histories document the actions and stories of those who attended churches that have closed or are working to preserve a church. Topics (so far) include the story of Grace United Methodist Church and its decline and closing in the mid-2010's. Compiled transcripts are included.

Administrative History

Grace United Methodist Church was a century-old church and community centered in Tyaskin, MD. Beginning in 1908, Rev. John W. Hardesty sought a place to create the church and leased an old house belonging to William H. Jackson, fixing it up and preparing it for services later that year. In 1909, the Methodist Society known as the Grace Methodist Episcopal Church was created with a membership of Seventy-four. The Church Building was later built and dedicated in 1910 at a cost of $7,000, later repayed by the community by 1919. In 2014, the Church was unexpectedly closed as churches in the surrounding area, notably Asbury Church. They were notified that September, 2014, by the district Superintendent that the church had been closed by the Superintendents' Conference.

NCOH-0005_00001: This interview was conducted by Creston Long with Kenneth and Maurice Bailey on August 22, 2017. Kenneth and Maurice belong to Grace United Methodist Church in Tyaskin, MD. Kenneth and Maurice discuss their memories of the church and the surrounding area of their youth as well as how the church was forced to close while under their care.
