This collection consists of correspondence from John E. Grubb, who served as an Aviation Chief Machinist’s Mate (ACMM) in the Navy during WWII. Most of the letters are written to his wife, Annie Murrell “Merle” Allcorn, at home in Texas. The letters date from 1941 -1952, with the majority of letters written from 1944-1945.

John Edward Grubb was born on November 12, 1909 in Redkey, Richland Township, Jay County, Indiana. He married Annie Murrell “Merle” Allcorn, from Lott, Texas. Grubb enlisted in military service with the US Navy in June 1942, and he was discharged in July 1945. He was originally with TS-13 Squadron and later became an Aviation Chief Machinist’s Mate. He died February 6, 2007.

The letters date from 1941-1952, with the majority of letters written from 1944-1945. Originally assigned to TS-13 Squadron, some of Grubb's earlier letters come from Corpus Christi, Texas and Quonset Point, Rhode Island, where he was stationed for training. Over the course of the war, however, he writes more about South and Central America, without giving too many clues as to his location away because of strict Army censorship. He was with CNT Operations, and was later an Aviation Chief Machinist’s Mate at the Link Celestial School. He writes about attending and teaching classes as well as about culture in the areas he’s stationed, such as mentioning the coati, an animal native to South & Central America. He also gives insight into his family life.

They are arranged in chronological order, from 1941-1952. The last two folders contain undated correspondence, letters not written by John Grubb, and ephemera.
