The Emily and Bill Briddell Collection contains genealogical records of the Briddell, Ames, Stevenson and other families. The collection ranges from 1672-2017 with the bulk of materials from 1880-2000. the collection contains correspondence, official and unofficial documents, pamphlets, maps, and photographs.
Emily Briddell was born on July 14, 1927 near Dalby's in Northampton County, VA. the daucghter of the late Rufus T. Ames and Lillian Stevenson Ames of Northampton. Gradtuating from old Northampton High School in Eastville VA in 1944 Emily pursued a career in nursing, graduating from the Elizabeth Buxton Hospital School of Nursing in Newport News, VA in 1947. upon her graduation Emily attained employment at the Elizabeth Buxton Hospital and later worked at Northampton-Accomac Memorial Hospital and Peninsula Regional Medical Center.
Emily married William B. Birddell Sr. on October 16, 1948 and they remained married for 72 years. the Briddells had four children Rebecca A. Skinner of Salisbury, MD; Paige B. Hazelton (Bob) of Timonium, MD; Bryan Briddell (Sue) of Saratoga Springs, NY; and Donna Bartrug (Rocky) of Hebron, MD.
Heavily involved in her comunity, Emily was Girl Scout Leader for Troop #98 from 1961-1967. furthermore she engaged in volunteer work with the PTA of North Salisbury Elementary School and the Opportunity Shop for over 40 years. She was a life member of Plus Volunteers of PRMC, serving over 2500 hours in the Diabetic Nursing Department and actively served with the Board of Elections as Democratic Chief Judge for the Salisbury City elections (1978-1984). In 1982, Emily joined Chapter V of PEO Sisterhood serving on various committees, and as corresponding secretary, and treasurer. finally, Emily was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class on Phillip Morris Drive in Salisbury.
William ("Bill") Briddell Sr. was born in 1927 in Princess Anne Maryland, he was the son of the late John Paul and Annie (Bloodsworth) Briddell. He was a graduate of Washington High School and a veteran of WWII serving in the Army in the Pacific Islands until contracting malaria and receiving an honorable discharge. William Briddell was married to Emily Stevenson Ames on October 16, 1948.
Bill's early employment was with Commercial Credit Corp (GA) and then with Larus and Brothers Tobacco (PA). He returned to Salisbury in 1955 to lease Atlantic Esso on North Salisbury Boulevard, eventually buying it in 1962. from then on Bill operated his buisiness as T/A Briddell's Exxon Service Center until his retirement in 1987. this was a short retirement, as Mr. Briddell subsequently went to work as a parking attendant in downtown Salisbury until his final retirement in 2001.
Like his wife, Bill valued his community and regularly gave back and volunteered. He was a member of the Salisbury Lion's Club (Treasurer 1973-74, President 1977-78, and Deputy District Governor 1980-81). He was a member and past president of AARP #1276; was President and Liaison of the American Field Service (AFS) program- Salisbury Chapter; served on the Mayor's Roundtable under Mayor Barry Tilghman in 2008; was an alternate for the City of Salisbury Zoning Board; was past member of the City of Salisbury Traffic Advisory Committee; past Board member helping to form the Johnny O Recovery Center; and was a Life Member of PRMC Plus Volunteers. The last large project that he participated in was fundraising for the restoration of the Salisbury Bandstand in Salisbury City Park (2002). In 2005, Bill was nominated for volunteerism and community service by the Commission for Aging. He was a Wicomico County Business Frontline Person of the Year. He was honored in 2006 by Lion's Club International with the Melvin Jones' Fellow for Dedicated Humanitarian Service. though his favorite award was his 1966 Rotary's Four Way Test Award.
A devout christian from childhood, Bill maintained his spirtuality throughout his life attending church regularly as a member of Christ United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class.
The Emily and Bill Briddell Collection includes records of the Briddell family from 1672-2010 with a bulk ranging between 1880-200. It is arranged into four series which are, GENEALOGICAL DOCUMENTS, ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS, FLAGS AND PAMPHLETS, and PHOTOGRAPHS.
The Genealogical Documents Series follows the history of the Briddell Family and their related lines through official documents and contains the Genealogical research of Emily and William Briddell. the Original Documents Series follows the history of the Briddell Family and their related lines using original correspondence and photos. the Flags and Pamphlets Series contains related and unrelated pamphlets along with books relating to historic flags and flag design. the Photographs Series contains original photographs and collages of extended family members. the collection also contains several folders which function as unpublished biographical representations of the lives of Emily Briddell, Lilian Stevenson, and the union of Bill and Emily Briddell.
