The Lieutenant Allan Morton Thomas Jr. Letters consists of letters and personal correspondence from Lieutenant Allan Morton Thomas Jr., USNR. to his wife Georgia E. Thomas from 1942 to 1945. Thomas Jr. was a Lieutenant on LCI(L) - 225 in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Thomas Jr. wrote about his life aboard the ship in the censored locations of the Pacific Theater. Several letters have missing pages and some lines are censored by the U.S. Navy. At the time, Thomas Jr.’s wife Georgia E. Thomas and daughter Margaret Anne, lived primarily in Bethesda, Maryland, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. The transcription of the letters is attached. Allan Morton Thomas Jr. was born on September 23, 1910 and was an only child. He attended the University of Maryland, Ohio State, and Cornell University. First enlisted, he began as a lieutenant junior grade then was promoted to lieutenant on May 1, 1943. He was appointed a lieutenant on the U.S.S. LCI(L) - 225, Amphibious Force – Atlantic Fleet in the U.S. Navy on December 12, 1942. He arrived at a foreign port on February 17, 1943 and his ship then became part of Flotilla 7, Group 19 to the South Pacific Fleet. From February 1943 to March 1944, he took part in training operations, visited various ports and military bases, and the town life in undisclosed locations. He was treated for kidney stones from March 4, 1944 to April 17, 1944 in U.S. Naval Base Hospital #10, Navy 135, in Merrylands, Sydney, Australia. After a gap from May 1, 1944 to September 23, 1945, his letters end on September 27, 1945. He married Georgia E. Thomas (born November 14, 1917) and had a daughter Margaret Anne, nicknamed Peggy (born December 18, 1942).
