The Lankford Family Papers document the Somerset County, Maryland family's activities through extensive correspondence, land records, photographs, newspaper clippings, genealogical notes, and other materials. While the collection dates between 1683 and 1975, the majority dates between 1812 and 1897. Much of the correspondence revolves around Benjamin Lankford (1798-1886), who served in the Maryland General Assembly between the 1840s and 1870s, as well as his wife, Susan, and her sister Mary Jane Guillet. The correspondence in the collection is described at the item level.
The Lankford family settled in Somerset County, Maryland as far back as the 1680s, owning hundreds of acres near Crisfield. Benjamin Lankford (1798-1886) served in the Maryland General Assembly intermittently from the 1840s to 1876, first as a member of the Whig Party and later, in the 1850s, as a Republican. Susan, Benjamin's wife, managed the plantation while he served in Annapolis; the family owned many slaves during this time. Susan's sister, Mary Jane Guillet, moved to New Orleans in the 1830s before eventually settling in Missouri in the next decade. The Lankford family tree is extensive and documented within the collection.
The Lankford Family Papers are arranged into 15 series. The original arrangment scheme used four numerical units: accession year, accesion number, series number, item number (for example, 2000.02.02.03 indicated the third item in series two of the collection). The item numbers in the inventory reference this scheme.
