The Lankford family photographs documents the lives and marital relationships of the Lankford, Porter, Scott, and Hayward families from 1860 to 1947. The photographs focus mainly on the Lankford family of Princess Anne, Maryland, particularly Dr. Henry “Harry” Marshall Lankford. Photographs within the collection include cabinet cards, tintypes, and gelatin silver prints. Diary transcriptions from Ida Marshall Lankford provide insight into her life while living at Beckford Manor in 1894.
Henry Fillmore Lankford (1856-1935) was born to parents Henry Smith and Mary Lankford in Somerset County, Maryland. Lankford attended Washington Academy, St. John’s Academy and studied law under John Crisfield. After being admitted to the Bar in 1877, Lankford was appointed Deputy Clerk of the Circuit Court for Somerset County. In 1883, he was appointed to Clerk of the Circuit Court. Lankford also served as Vice President and Attorney of the Bank of Somerset. Henry Fillmore Lankford married Ida Anna Marshall Lankford (1854-1943) in the late 1870s and had one child, Henry “Harry” Marshall Lankford in 1881. The Lankford family lived at the family home, Beckford Manor, in Princess Anne, Maryland.
Ida Anna Marshall Lankford (1854-1943) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Charles Thomas and Priscilla Porter Marshall. Ida was one of five children, Mary Virginia Marshall Whittington (1850-1932), Rush Porter Marshall (1860-1898), Emily Estelle Marshall Lankford (1868-1954), and Hattie Evelyn Marshall Scott (1870-1956).
Henry “Harry” Marshall Lankford (1881-1951) was born and raised in Somerset County, Maryland. Henry graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1905 and practiced as a physician in Princess Anne for the majority of his adult life. He served as a captain in World War I and was honorably discharged in 1918. Harry married physician Catherine Alice Fitzsimmons Lankford (1883-1937) in 1908 and operated a medical practice with her until her death in 1937. Harry and Catherine had two children, Henry Fitzsimmons Lankford (1924-1971) and Catherine Marshall Lankford Baldwin (1919-1966). Harry Marshall Lankford lived at Beckford Manor with his family until his passing in 1951.
Joseph Gunby Scott Sr. (1863-1911) was born in Somerset County to Elizabeth and William James Scott. Scott married Ida Lankford’s sister, Hattie Evelyn Marshall, and linked the families of the Marshall’s and Lankford’s together. Joseph and Hattie had three children together, Joseph Gunby Scott Jr., (1900-1969) William Marshall Scott, (1905-1993) and Ida Evelyn Scott Phillips (1907-1997).
Arza Harris Hayward (1819-1892) was born and raised in Augusta, Maine. Arza worked as a grocer in Maine and Pennsylvania.
