Abstract

The Architectural Drawings for Chestnut Street School in Wicomico County (Md.) offer a brief look into architectural and engineering planning processes during 1933. These drawings of various blue prints provides a glimpse into the art of architecture during the early half of the 1900s as well as what this new public school was looking for when building their new complex.

Administrative History

The construction of the original Chestnut Street School building is not known. A second school was built in 1882, but destroyed in the 1886 Salisbury Fire. The third school was built in 1887 and was named the Chestnut Street Grammar School and High School which was a public institution for all ages. In 1905, the high school moved to new grounds leaving the Chestnut Street School to be solely a grammar school. After a few years of matriculation the school was abandoned in 1939. Soon after the Chestnut School Property and another nearby property, the Bell Street Elementary were replaced with a new structure that become North Salisbury Elementary.

Featured on most of the blue prints or floor plans is the title of what architectural rendering is featured, a scale to size, the initials of the draftsman Jack Elderdice, and the date of creation, 1933
