The Jay and Carrie Kleinhenn papers document their family life in Delaware and Maryland circa 1860-1995; the bulk of the material dates from 1915-1949. It consists of personal papers, scrapbooks, photographs and negatives, and other materials related to family history.
Jay Melvin Kleinhenn (1906-1973) was born in Hart, Michigan to Arthur and Cora Kleinhenn. The family relocated to Sussex County, Delaware, where Arthur Kleinhenn was employed as a teacher. Carrie Elizabeth LeCates (1908-1995) was born in Delmar, Delaware to Joseph and Willie LeCates. She had two sisters, Sonora LeCates Hastings and Verda LeCates Maddox. Jay Kleinhenn married Carrie LeCates on December 24, 1932 and the couple settled in Bridgeville, Delaware. For 43 years, Jay Kleinhenn was employed in the construction department of Diamond State Telephone Company, a subsidiary of Bell Telephone Company. Following his retirement, he served as a bus driver for the Howard T. Ennis School in Georgetown, Delaware. Carrie Kleinhenn graduated from the Women’s College of the University of Delaware in 1930. For 31 years, she taught math and science at Bridgeville Junior and Senior High Schools. Following Mr. Kleinhenn’s death, she married Lowell Andrews, who died in 1979.

The Jay and Carrie Kleinhenn papers document their family life in Delaware and Maryland circa 1860-1995; the bulk of the material dates from 1915-1949.
Series I: Personal Papers documents the lives of Jay and Carrie Kleinhenn and LeCates and Kleinhenn family history. The papers include scrapbooks created by Carrie Kleinhenn, as well as ephemera from Bridgeville High School.
Series II: Visual Materials documents the lives of Jay and Carrie Kleinhenn and members of the LeCates, Kleinhenn, and related families through a series of photographs taken by either professional studios or Jay or Carrie Kleinhenn. The photographs include images of Carrie’s youth, growing up on the family farm on Pepperbox Road, as well as her tenure as a teacher at Bridgeville High School. The photographs also include images of their home in Bridgeville, family vacations, Jay’s professional position at Diamond State Telephone Company and members of their extended families.
Series III: Photographic Negatives documents the lives of Jay and Carrie Kleinhenn and members of the LeCates, Kleinhenn, and related families through a series of photographic negatives taken by either professional studios or Jay or Carrie Kleinhenn. The negatives were housed in envelopes and data regarding the negatives was written on the envelopes by Carrie Kleinhenn. The data was transcribed on the new housing material.
Series IV: Additional Material documents the lives of Jay and Carrie Kleinhenn and LeCates family history through personal papers and visual materials. The papers include notebooks and class rosters of Jay Kleinhenn’s father, Arthur Kleinhenn, from his tenure as a teacher in Delaware and Ohio. The visual materials include photographs of Carrie Kleinhenn’s sisters, Sonora LeCates Hastings and Verda LeCates Maddox.
The Jay and Carrie Kleinhenn papers have been arranged in four series. Series I and II are arranged by subject. Series III and IV are each arranged in two Subseries and by subject.
