Daughter of Dr. John Lee and Beulah (Vincent) Riley, Virginia Lee Riley was born on December 5, 1913, in Snow Hill, Maryland. A 1935 graduate of Wellesley College, Virginia was teaching high school chemistry in MD when she met Edwin Crocker in 1936. Ed taught vocational agriculture and later worked for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service. They married on September 18, 1942 in Rochester, Minnesota. During WWII, Ed served in the Headquarters and Services Co. of the 653rd Engineer Battalion with the rank of Sergeant while Virginia served as a civilian spotter watching for enemy planes along MD’s eastern shore. They moved to Storm Lake, Iowa in 1947. They were active in the Izaak Walton League of America, The Nature Conservancy, the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union, and other conservation groups. Virginia died on November 11, 2007, at the Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake, where she had been a resident since October 1, 2001. Edwin died on December 27, 1987.
