Abstract

St. Peter’s Methodist Church records consist of the records of St. Peter’s Methodist Church in Hopewell, Maryland, offering insight into a Methodist congregation from 1857-1984. It contains ledgers documenting the church’s baptisms, marriages, membership, and finances. It includes a ledger recording the church’s history to 1869, and a copy of the deed uniting it with Immanuel Methodist Church in Crisfield, Maryland, in 1965. The collection also contains ephemera related to the church. It includes a photograph of volunteers repainting the church in 1954, and a program marking the church’s 200th anniversary in 1982.

Administrative History

St. Peter’s Methodist Church was founded as a congregation of the Methodist Episcopal Church, which merged with two other denominations to form the Methodist Church in 1939, and with a third denomination to form the United Methodist Church in 1968. St. Peter’s congregation originated with a group of Methodists who met in the home of William Miles in 1782. A church named Miles Meeting House was built two years later. Reverend Joshua Thomas, the “Parson of the Islands,” preached his first sermon there. The church was renamed St. Peter’s in 1813. Construction of the present church began in 1850 and finished in 1852. It was renovated in 1901, 1934 and 1940, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. The congregation of St. Peter’s merged with Immanuel Methodist Church in Crisfield, Maryland, in 1965. The original church continues to hold services on holidays and special occasions.
