The papers of Woodrow T. Wilson are a comprehensive documentation of his extensive research conducted to author his four-volume series on Crisfield, Maryland and Somerset County, Maryland as well as numerous articles written for the Crisfield Times. Manuscripts, proof copies, and unpublished materials authored by Wilson and his associates are also included. The amassed collection of newspaper clippings, birth, marriage and death records, family histories and typed articles are a testament to the people of Crisfield, 1907-2000 with the bulk of the material dating from 1968-1980.
Woodrow T. Wilson (1913-1997) was born on the Wilson family homestead in Marion, Somerset County, Maryland to John Coulbourn and Hattie Williams Wilson. He received his education from Marion High School and then went to LaSalle University in Philadelphia where he earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting. After graduation, Wilson was employed as an accountant for Crisfield Light and Power. He married the former Margaret Hambrecht (1921-2015) of Madison, Wisconsin and had three children, Thomas (1950-1973), Johanna and Carol. When World War II erupted, he was a member of Company L, 115th Regiment of Crisfield and served in both the Pacific and European Theaters as an Infantry Officer participating in the Battle of the Bulge. He continued his military service serving in the Korean Conflict as a Battalion Commander as well as post-war service as Post Inspector General at Forts Riley and Leavenworth in Kansas. Simultaneously, Wilson furthered his education at the University of Kansas and Kansas State College. He retired from the United States Army with the rank of Lieutenant Col. in 1962 returning to his beloved Crisfield. Retirement did not stop Wilson; he became the Executive Director of the Crisfield Housing Authority and managed the accounting records for Somers Cover Marina He was a prolific writer who authored a four-volume series on the history of Somerset County and the people of Crisfield, Maryland as well as wrote a column for the Crisfield Times.
