The collection includes a biographical sketch of William S. Moore and extensive materials relating to Mr. Moore’s exciting and interesting service as a financial officer in Europe during World War II, especially the securing of German gold hoards in East Germany before the area was taken over by the Russians. The career series relates to matters of the Wicomico Board of Education, the Maryland Association of Boards of Education, Delmarva Power & Light Company, and local real estate. Series III contains personal and career information plus curriculum vitae. Civic matters, politics, Lion’s Club, United Way, and general Delmarva dedications are contained in Series IV. The last series contains material on legal, estate, and financial matters.
William S. Moore III was born on June 24, 1903 to Lavina Acworth Moore and William S. Moore. He grew up in Fruitland, Maryland, a rural community on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
A native of Fruitland, Maryland. In 1920, he graduated from Wicomico High School and went on to earn a B. S. in economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1924. After working for an ice cream manufacturing company, he served in the accounting department at Eastern Shore Public Service until volunteering for military service in 1942.
Mr. Moore’s intensive service training included Army Finance, Provost’s Marshal’s School, Civil Affairs Training School at Harvard University, the Military Government School at the University of Virginia, plus economics mobilization course and attendance at the Comptroller Department School.
His U. S. Army service included: Assistant Finance Officer in the U. S. Army Finance Office in Baltimore, Finance and Disbursing Officer at Ft. George G. Meade in Maryland, Chief of German Currency Section, World War II, Military Governor of Mulheim au Main, Assistant Fiscal Officer, Assembly Area Command, Reims, France, Captain to Colonel – presently retired Colonel, USAF.
Upon leaving the active service in 1946, he became secretary and treasurer of the electric company that would become Delmarva Power. He served as Vice President for Personnel, Industrial Relations for Delmarva Power & Light until 1971
In 1959, he was appointed by Governor J. Tawes to the post of president of the Wicomico Board of Education. He served in that capacity until 1975. He also served as president of the Maryland Association of Boards of Education and a member of Salisbury-Wicomico Airport Commission which rearranged the use of land to provide for local commuter service and was active in fundraising for Peninsula General Hospital.
