The Wicomico County Board of Education was established in 1867 with the formation of Wicomico County. Members of the Board of Education are appointed by the Governor of Maryland. In the first year of the county’s existence, 24 one-room schools were authorized for construction at an average cost of $275. By 1875 Wicomico County had eleven African-American schools and four years later that number increased to 14. The first Industrial School opened in a vacant room of the Salisbury Colored Grammar School in 1902. By 1903 the county had 88 public schools. The school year of 1912-1913 marked the high point in terms of numbers of schools in the county. There were 160 teachers for 158 classrooms in 106 schools for an average of 5,719 students. Due to improvements in transportation and school consolidation, the number of schools in the county in the early part of the 20th century was 26. Most of those schools were named for donors or surrounding locations. By 1937 nearly all of the county’s one-room schoolhouses were closed and students attended consolidated schools.
Integration began in 1962 with elementary schools in the county and by 1974 all of the schools in Wicomico County had been integrated. There are currently 24 schools in Wicomico County including elementary, middle and high schools. The mission of the Wicomico County Public School System is to provide all students an educational foundation and a set of skills which will enable them to become responsible and productive citizens in our society.
