Abstract

The E. Homer White papers document the political career of Edward Homer White, a Delegate from the Maryland State House and Senate, from 1946-1991 with the bulk of the material dating from 1962-1978. Materials include newspaper clippings, photographs and essays that document E. Homer White’s political campaigns, causes and career. Photographs and correspondence concern Delegate Homer’s campaign, his political stances, as well as events and receptions he had attended during his career. There are two scrapbooks which include newspaper clippings concerned with E. Homer White’s elections and political causes.

Biographical History

Edward Homer White (1911-1998) served as a state politician in Maryland for much of his adult life, serving Maryland’s 36th District (Middle-Eastern Eastern Shore) as both a Delegate and a Maryland State Senator. An active member of the political community, E. Homer White was a Democrat, who served on the aviation, civil defense and agriculture committees; he spent ten years as speaker pro-tempore in the House of Delegates and was chair of the water safety commission as well as a prominent member of the traffic safety committee.

His formative years were spent in public school, before attending college at William and Mary and Strayer Business College.  After graduation, he served as a military police officer during World War II.  In 1945, after his honorable discharge, E. Homer White spent time as a businessman prior to his election to the House of Delegates in 1947.

Delegate White remained in office until his resignation from the House in 1969.  He spent several sessions as Assistant Field Services Director of the Department of Motor Vehicles before winning the Maryland State Senate seat in 1975 which he held until his retirement from politics in 1978.         

E. Homer White was active in the Salisbury community, where he attended Trinity United Methodist Church and the local Rotary International Meetings well into his retirement.  Edward White had a wife, Rebecca Beach whom he married in 1941, they had two sons.
