Abstract

The records of the Town and Country Garden Club document the Wicomico County, Maryland ladies social club through their administrative files and activities from 1953 – 2014 with the bulk of the material dating from 1996 – 2006. Administratively, the organization held regular meetings as reflected in the records which are comprised of the organization's by-laws, membership records, financial records and meeting minutes. Socially, the garden club was very active hosting annual flower shows and Christmas Tea’s, these activities are documented via photographs, scrapbooks, and planning records.

Administrative History

The Town and Country Garden Club formed when a group of fifteen ladies, with a mutual interest in flowers and gardening, met at the home of Miss Marian Morton on January 21, 1953. At this time, dates for meetings were discussed and Mrs. Anna Powell, Mrs. Elsie Hearne, Miss Marian Morton and Miss Ruth Powell were chosen to form by-laws for the organization. Since the club’s inception, the ladies have continued to meet regularly, to host flower shows and Christmas teas as well as participate in other civic and social activities.

Scope and Content Note

Series I: Administrative Files, document the administrative activities of the garden club and include the articles of incorporation, by-laws, meeting minutes, financial records, and membership information. There is a significant gap in the organization’s meeting minutes from 1955 – 1970.

Series II: Activity Files, documents the various activities that the club would participate in including an annual Christmas tea and spring flower show, also included are scrapbooks put together by the organization to highlight yearly activities including those aforementioned as well as potting parties and community service efforts.

The Town and Country Garden Club records have been arranged into two series, ADMINISTRATIVE FILES and ACTIVITY FILES.
