Abstract

The World War II Veterans project records document orally and written the histories of Wicomico County, Maryland men and women who served in the differing branches of the military during World War II. Written and audio evidence documents the veteran’s enlistment, rank, military unit, and where they were stationed for the duration of the war. Records were collected by Sylvia Bradley and the Westside Historical Society in 1995 with subsequent records periodically added in 1996.

Administrative History

Documenting the World War II veterans of Wicomico County was a project undertaken by the Westside Historical Society in 1995 to commemorate the ending of the Second World War. The project was undertaken by Sylvia Bradley, Assistant Professor of History at Salisbury University and a volunteer committee of World War II veterans, Mervin Disharoon, Robert Freeman, Joseph Layton, Alice Mitchell, William S. Moore, James Murrell, Thomas Townsend, and William Wright. A one-day conference was held on the campus of Salisbury University where oral histories were recorded via audio and VHS tape of more than 100 veterans. Written documentation of more than 350 veterans was also collected. These interviews and veteran documentation were compiled and published into a book entitled, We Live Among Heroes: a Commemorative of Wicomico County’s World War Two Veterans.
