Abstract

Parent Teacher Association, Wicomico County records document educational changes and the involvement of the local, state, and national PTA organization in the Wicomico County, Maryland school system. The records date from George Whitehead’s involvement with the PTA from 1985-1999 with the bulk of the material dating from 1985-1994. Participation of the Wicomico County Council PTA in the educational system and in the local community are documented via meeting agendas, correspondence, reports, newsletters, newspaper clippings, photographs, and convention packets.

Administrative History

After the establishment of the National Parent Teacher Association in 1897 and the Maryland Parent Teacher Association in 1916, the Wicomico County Council of PTA’s was founded to provide a voice to students and engage parents, teachers, and the community in the education system on the eastern shore.  Based in Salisbury, Maryland, the WCCPTA continues to strive to communicate with local and federal governments and organizations on issues and policies concerning children.  In addition, the PTA supports the development of parenting skills necessary to provide and protect their children.  Through a network of students, parents, teachers, and community members, the WCCPTA works to better children’s education, health, and safety at school and at home.
