The League of Women Voters, Mid-Shore records documents the development thereof and corresponding activities of the non-partisan, multi-issue organization of Talbot, Dorchester and Caroline counties, 1971-2015. Records focus on the non-partisan education of the communities served through research, voter education and candidate forums, as well as the publication of the Voters’ Guide. Additionally, administrative files collectively document the League’s organizational practices through meeting minutes, correspondence, membership records and program plans.
August 1971, a group of Talbot County, Maryland, women gathered informally at the home of Virginia Johnston to discuss the possibility of forming a chapter of the League of Women Voters. Nationally, the League of Women Voters is an American civic organization that was formed in 1920; to take a larger role in public affairs prior to women obtaining the right to vote. In Talbot County, a provisional league was formed and began with a robust membership of 55.
After completing national requirements in 1973, the League was officially formed as one of the then 19 active chapters in Maryland. Over the years, the League’s work was visible throughout Talbot County and they had a well-established rapport with the community. Additionally, joint activities with league chapters in Kent and Queen Anne’s counties substantiated their involvement on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. In the mid-1990s, the League merged with Dorchester County and added Caroline County becoming the League of Women Voters, Mid-Shore. Today, the non-partisan multi-issue organization continues to influence public policy through education and advocacy.
