This travel diary was written in 1833 and 1834 by an unidentified widow. In 1833 she traveled from Litchfield, Connecticut to Salem, Massachusetts and attended several religious services along the way. In 1834 she made a longer journey from Cooperstown, New York to Columbus, Ohio, travelling mostly by stage coach other than the steamboat "Michigan" from Buffalo to Cleveland. Along the way, she passed the construction of the Eerie Canal and met an old man with a wooden leg who had fought in the Battle of Ohio, as well as cities including Syracuse, Geneva, Seneca Falls, Clariena Hollow, Lyme, and Rochester. This  diary  documents  two  journeys  that  a  19th-century  widow  took:  a  wintry  ride  from  Salem,  Massachusetts,  to  Litchfield,  Connecticut,  in  1833,  and  a  much  longer  trek  to  Columbus,  Ohio,  in  the  summer  of  1834.  The  widow’s  1834  trip  started  in  Cooperstown,  New  York,  on  May  27  when  she  headed  west  on  a  stagecoach.  After  visiting  with  friends  in  smaller  New  York  villages  –  one  of  which  was  the  location  of  her  late  husband’s  grave  –  the  widow  boarded  the  steamship  Michigan  in  Buffalo  on  June  10.  She  arrived  in  Cleveland,  Ohio,  seasick  from  Lake  Erie’s  turbulent  waters,  but  eventually  reached  her  destination  in  Columbus  on  June  21.  The transcribed diary is attached.
